Full job description
Job Description Summary
As Product Owner for MV Components, you will provide technical ownership for the specification, selection, integration, and lifecycle support of medium-voltage equipment used in global FACTS projects, including STATCOM and SVC systems.
You will work across both tendering and project execution, translating customer and system requirements into clear equipment specifications and RFQs, evaluating supplier solutions, reviewing technical documentation and test evidence, and ensuring that selected components are safe, compliant, reliable, and cost effective.
The role covers equipment such as reactors, capacitor banks, resistors, surge arresters, instrument transformers, disconnectors, earthing switches, insulators, and related primary equipment. You will collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Layout and Mechanical Engineering, Sourcing, Quality, Project Engineering, and global suppliers.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role with responsibility for solving complex component and interface issues, improving standard solutions, capturing lessons learned, and guiding other engineers in MV component engineering.
Job Description
About FACTS Solution Line and the Role
GE Vernova’s Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), including STATCOM and SVC solutions, support grid stability, power quality, and the integration of renewable energy.
Our FACTS projects combine power electronics, control and protection systems, system engineering, and electromechanical equipment into complete grid solutions. Medium-voltage equipment is a critical part of these systems and must be correctly specified, selected, integrated, tested, and supported throughout the project lifecycle.
As Lead Engineer – MV Components, you will act as a technical owner and hands-on engineering specialist for MV primary equipment. You will work across tendering and project execution in collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams, Sourcing, Quality, site teams, and global suppliers.
Roles and Responsibilities
MV Component Engineering and Technical Ownership
Provide technical ownership for MV primary equipment used in FACTS applications, including reactors, capacitor banks, resistors, surge arresters, instrument transformers, disconnectors, earthing switches, insulators, and related equipment.
Maintain a strong understanding of component requirements, electrical duties, interfaces, applicable standards, supplier capabilities, and lessons learned throughout the equipment lifecycle.
Make practical engineering decisions that balance safety, reliability, compliance, project requirements, cost, lead time, and equipment lifecycle considerations.
Tendering and ITO Engineering
Review customer specifications and clause-by-clause requirements related to MV equipment.
Translate customer, system, and project requirements into clear and commercially appropriate equipment specifications and RFQs.
Work with Systems Engineering to understand equipment ratings, electrical duties, insulation levels, short-circuit requirements, protection philosophy, environmental conditions, and system interfaces.
Support technical clarifications, identify deviations and risks, and distinguish mandatory requirements from optional or over-specified requirements.
Evaluate supplier technical offers, identify gaps and exceptions, and support the selection of safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
Provide component-related input to tender deliverables, equipment lists, cost estimates, schedules, and technical risk reviews.
Project and OTR Engineering
Prepare and review project-specific MV component specifications and technical purchase requirements.
Review and approve supplier documentation, including data sheets, drawings, calculations, bills of material, installation and maintenance instructions, inspection and test plans, type-test reports, routine-test reports, and FAT documentation.
Verify that selected equipment meets project requirements, applicable IEC and other relevant standards, insulation coordination requirements, environmental conditions, system duties, and internal engineering practices.
Manage technical clarifications with suppliers and follow open technical issues through resolution.
Provide component expertise during manufacturing, testing, installation, commissioning, and resolution of project or site issues.
Equipment Integration and Cross-Functional Collaboration
Ensure correct integration of MV components into the overall FACTS solution.
Coordinate with Layout and Mechanical Engineering regarding equipment dimensions, electrical clearances, support arrangements, connection interfaces, weights, lifting requirements, installation constraints, and maintainability.
Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Control and Protection, Power Electronics, Sourcing, Quality, Project Engineering, and site teams to resolve multidisciplinary interfaces and prevent late design changes.
Ensure that supplier drawings and equipment data provide complete and consistent inputs for layout, civil, busbar, cabling, installation, and commissioning activities.
Support effective technical handover between tendering and project execution teams.
Supplier Engineering, Testing, and Quality
Lead technical discussions and structured evaluations with suppliers during tendering and project execution.
Challenge unsupported deviations, unnecessary design complexity, and over-specification while maintaining safety, quality, reliability, and contractual compliance.
Define and verify inspection and testing requirements. Review type-test validity, test coverage, FAT procedures, test results, certificates, and technical deviations.
Identify missing or non-compliant technical evidence, assess the associated technical risk, and define appropriate corrective actions.
Support Sourcing and Quality in supplier selection, qualification, technical alignment, development, and performance improvement.
Support root-cause investigations, non-conformance resolution, and corrective actions for component-related issues.
Standardization and Technical Leadership
Develop and maintain standard specifications, RFQ templates, technical evaluation criteria, checklists, reference solutions, and engineering guidance for MV components.
Promote the reuse of proven and standardized solutions while recognizing justified project-specific requirements.
Identify opportunities to reduce engineering effort, equipment lead time, lifecycle cost, and technical risk.
Capture lessons learned and incorporate relevant findings into specifications, checklists, standard work, and supplier requirements.
Contribute to engineering databases, equipment libraries, digital tools, and structured supplier information.
Provide practical technical guidance and mentoring to engineers working on MV component activities.
Review critical engineering deliverables and promote a First Time Right approach through clear requirements, disciplined reviews, and sound technical decisions.
Share knowledge through training, documented lessons learned, standard work, and technical discussions.
Support prioritization of component-related activities across multiple tenders and projects while remaining hands-on in engineering deliverables and issue resolution.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Relevant experience in medium- or high-voltage primary equipment, electrical component engineering, substation equipment, or a closely related field.
Practical experience in preparing or reviewing technical specifications, RFQs, supplier offers, drawings, calculations, test documentation, and other engineering deliverables.
Knowledge of applicable IEC standards and fundamental MV or HV engineering principles.
Ability to understand electrical single-line diagrams, equipment ratings, insulation requirements, system duties, and multidisciplinary equipment interfaces.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make technically sound decisions and clearly document their basis.
Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
Desired Characteristics
Experience with FACTS, STATCOM, SVC, HVDC, substations, or other grid-connected power systems.
Technical knowledge of several MV equipment categories, such as reactors, capacitor banks, resistors, surge arresters, instrument transformers, disconnectors, earthing switches, or insulators.
Experience in insulation coordination, short-circuit requirements, equipment testing, supplier engineering, FAT participation, or technical issue resolution.
Ability to review supplier solutions critically and identify technical gaps, unnecessary complexity, over-specification, and opportunities for cost optimization.
Experience working with international suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams across tendering and project execution.
A structured approach to engineering documentation, planning, prioritization, and follow-up of technical actions.
Ability to influence technical decisions, guide other engineers, and bring stakeholders to practical engineering conclusions.
A continuous-improvement mindset with an interest in standardization, lessons learned, reusable solutions, and digital engineering tools.
Willingness to travel occasionally to supplier facilities, project sites, or test laboratories when required.
