Summary of Job Duties:
A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) I – Blood Bank performs routine and complex laboratory testing in the transfusion services department to ensure the safe and accurate selection of blood and blood products for patients.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).
ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).

Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care by supplying the patient with appropriate blood components
Perform ABO/Rh, IAT, DAT, antibody identification, crossmatching units of blood, and running the automated ABO/RH, IAT equipment
Wash red blood cells and platelets
Perform platelet crossmatching and platelet antibody identification
Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance
Issue blood and blood components to the floors
Understand the importance of massive trauma and to issue blood and blood components as set forth in the Massive Transfusion Protocol
Communicate effectively with the blood bank customers including physicians, nurses, and other UAMS staff members
Receive samples and to ensure all samples are appropriately labeled and collected properly for the Blood Bank
Assist in training of new staff and students
Maintain competency and train on all revised and new policy/procedures in a timely manner
Report any deviation from standard operating procedures to the supervisor in a timely manner
Perform daily reagent QC and equipment preventive maintenance with 100% accuracy.
Assist with performance of quarterly, semi-annual, and annual quality control
Perform other duties as needed
