Who We Are
Independent for over 75 years, Milliman delivers market-leading services and solutions to clients worldwide. Today, we are helping companies take on some of the world’s most critical and complex issues, including retirement funding and healthcare financing, risk management and regulatory compliance, data analytics, and business transformation.
Milliman invests in skills training and career development and gives all employees access to a variety of learning and mentoring opportunities. Our growing number of Milliman Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s) are employee-led communities that influence policy decisions, develop future leaders, and amplify the voices of their constituents. We encourage our employees to give back to their varied professions, including leadership in professional organizations. Please visit our web site (https://www.milliman.com/en/social-impact) to learn more about Milliman’s commitments to our people, inclusion, and sustainability.
Through a team of professionals ranging from actuaries to clinicians, technology specialists to plan administrators, we offer unparalleled expertise in employee benefits, investment consulting, healthcare, life insurance and financial services, and property and casualty insurance.
What You Will Do
This is a highly technical, hands-on engineering role focused on building practical AI solutions that solve real business problems. You’ll partner closely with actuaries, data scientists, software engineers, analysts, clinicians, and product leaders to identify opportunities where AI can improve our products, automate complex work, and help our team move significantly faster.
We’re looking for someone who loves building, experimenting, and learning. Excellent communication skills and a consultative mindset are a must. You should be equally comfortable evaluating the latest AI research, writing production-quality code, rapidly prototyping new ideas, and helping teammates understand how to use modern AI tools effectively.
This role offers the opportunity to join our team on a temporary basis. The position is expected to require a commitment of 20 hours per week for approximately 6 months. The duration of the position has the potential for extension based on performance and business needs.
AI Engineering
Lead the design, architecture, testing, and deployment of production AI and machine learning solutions for the organization’s most complex and strategically important use cases.
Build the reusable data and modeling infrastructure that lets the team develop and deploy new predictive models rapidly and repeatably.
Encode the team’s existing modeling process into agentic AI workflows that can be reused across many different prediction problems.
Use agentic AI to reproduce established predictions (for example, projected medical costs), then extend the same data and process to new predictions (for example, likelihood of an emergency department visit).
Develop LLM-enabled applications, agentic workflows, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
Evaluate foundation models and determine the right technologies for each use case, taking into consideration relevant constraints (e.g., IT security requirements).
Build AI services and APIs that integrate into existing software products.
Optimize AI systems for quality, reliability, latency, and cost.
Software Engineering
Define and exemplify high standards for production software engineering in AI-enabled systems, including maintainability, scalability, testing, and operational excellence.
Integrate AI capabilities into existing applications and workflows.
Build automated testing, evaluation, and deployment pipelines for AI systems.
Work closely with the team to ensure AI solutions are maintainable and scalable.
Applied AI Innovation
Stay current with rapidly evolving AI technologies, research, and tooling.
Quickly prototype promising ideas and evaluate their practical business value.
Identify new predictions and products the team’s data and process can support, and stand them up quickly as repeatable capabilities for health systems and insurers.
Identify opportunities where AI can improve healthcare analytics, software development, operations, or internal productivity.
Help transform research concepts into production-ready capabilities.
AI Enablement
Help data scientists, software engineers, analysts, actuaries, consultants, and other teammates effectively leverage AI in their daily work.
Recommend tools, workflows, and best practices that improve engineering productivity.
Provide expert technical leadership through demonstrations, documentation, architecture guidance, and mentorship that accelerates adoption of effective AI practices across the organization..
Continuously look for opportunities where AI can eliminate repetitive work and accelerate innovation.
What We Are Looking For
Professional Qualifications
Credentialed actuary, with a Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation.
Master in Public Health (MPH) degree with experience in the health insurance and provider markets.
10+ years of health risk adjustment experience.
5+ years designing and building production predictive models.
Health consulting experience.
Strong software engineering skills.
Deep statistical and modeling expertise.
Experience building applications using large language models (e.g., GPT, Claude, Llama, Gemini, or similar).
Experience deploying AI solutions into production cloud environments.
Strong understanding of modern machine learning concepts.
Personal Qualifications
Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical teammates.
Highly self-directed with strong problem-solving skills.
Curious, humble, collaborative, and eager to learn.
Individual(s) must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for immigration support or sponsorship from Milliman now or in the future.
The Team
The Minneapolis Health and Life practice is composed of healthcare and long-term care insurance professionals who provide our clients with industry-leading consulting services. We also develop and maintain innovate products that complement our consulting services. We are an expanding group with experience leading the way in industries that continuously change and evolve. Our office encourages an open and collaborative work environment that helps individuals grow and thrive.
The team is involved in work that supports all areas of the practice. The analyses and techniques used are cutting-edge while providing clients with accurate and easily interpreted business results. Employees balance working independently and collaborating with other team members. Analysts, actuaries, and subject matter experts work closely together to ensure solutions are both accurate and solve the correct problem for the client.
Location
This is a remote position. Candidates hired into this role may work onsite in select Milliman office locations, if they prefer. The expected application deadline for this job is September 1, 2026.
