Position Summary
The Product Development Chemist is responsible for developing, testing, and improving chemical formulations and paper products related to tissue, machine glaze (MG), and specialty paper manufacturing. This role works closely with operations, quality, production, customers, and suppliers to support product development, process optimization, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives within the mill environment.
The ideal candidate will have a strong chemistry background, experience in paper manufacturing or related industries, and the ability to translate laboratory findings into successful mill production results.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate chemical formulations for tissue, MG, and specialty paper products
- Support product trials through full scale production
- Analyze product performance, quality data, and process trends to identify improvement opportunities
- Work closely with mill operations and production teams to troubleshoot product and process issues
- Assist with development of coatings, additives, wet end chemistry, and fiber optimization
- Coordinate and document product trials, test results, and technical reports
- Collaborate with suppliers and customers regarding product specifications and performance expectations
- Support continuous improvement efforts focused on quality, efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
- Maintain laboratory equipment, testing procedures, and product documentation
- Participate in customer visits, technical discussions, and new product initiatives as needed
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 75% to support manufacturing locations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Paper Science, or related field required
- 3+ years of experience in paper manufacturing, tissue, coatings, converting, or related chemical/process industries preferred
- Experience with wet end chemistry, starches, coatings, strength additives, or specialty paper products preferred
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and product trials simultaneously
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and data analysis tools
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in tissue or machine glaze paper manufacturing
- Knowledge of paper testing methods and quality systems
- Experience supporting customer driven product development
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and process optimization
Working Conditions
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment around moving equipment, noise, heat, and chemicals
