About Us
We are a crown owned technology company that provides faster, safer internet for Aotearoa New Zealand’s schools and kura, with an aim to improve digital learning experiences and educational outcomes for all.
Since 2012 we have grown to support over 2,500 schools, operating one of the largest broadband networks in Aotearoa New Zealand, meeting the connectivity and cybersecurity needs of 900,000+ ākonga and kaiako and accounting for nearly 25% of the country’s daytime business internet traffic.
But we’re so much more than that.
We're building a better tomorrow through innovation
We use diverse technologies to take a creative approach to delivering meaningful outcomes for schools and kura.
About the Role
As our Senior Data Engineer, you will join our lean, collaborative Data Squad within the Architecture team. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and delivering N4L's data platform, data services, and analytics integrations.
This role balances technical execution with purpose. You will work closely with the Head of Data on day-to-day priorities, while receiving line management, engineering standards, and career development from our Software Development Manager.
What you will be doing
In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable APIs, backend data services, and robust ETL/ELT pipelines to seamlessly ingest and transform data from multiple sources. Dedicated to keeping sector data safe, you will implement privacy-preserving data handling, anonymisation techniques, and data governance frameworks using modern tools like OpenMetadata. Driven by an automation-first mindset, you will streamline operational workflows, explore AI-assisted engineering capabilities, and support the wider squad's growth through constructive code reviews and mentorship.
What you will need to be successful:
- Solid experience building APIs and backend services using Node.js, SQL, and MongoDB (or similar databases).
- Proven experience designing ETL/ELT workflows and working within modern data warehouse/lakehouse architectures.
- Comfort with Docker, containerised environments, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with or exposure to metadata/lineage tooling (e.g., OpenMetadata) and BI/analytics platforms (e.g., Qlik).
- A proactive approach to workflow orchestration, automation-first thinking, and data privacy.
About you
You are a thoughtful, collaborative engineer who values continuous learning and knowledge sharing. You care about the real-world impact of your work and want to help build an open, positive environment. You enjoy taking complex data challenges and turning them into smart, simple, and reliable solutions that benefit the New Zealand education sector
