Full job description
Hardware Architect (Hardware Staff Engineer)
East Kilbride, Scotland (Onsite/Hybrid)
Your Impact
As a Hardware Architect (Hardware Staff Engineer) you will provide technical leadership for the development of advanced monitoring, protection, recording, and analytics solutions used throughout electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution networks.
You will own the system and hardware architecture for complex embedded products, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and aligned with customer and business needs. Working closely with Firmware, Software, Systems, Test, and Product Management teams, you will define technical direction, make critical architectural decisions, and guide engineering teams from concept through deployment and lifecycle support.
Here's where you'll demonstrate your proficiencies:
Own the system and hardware architecture for embedded monitoring and industrial instrumentation products.
Define system-level requirements, architectures, interfaces, and technical strategies aligned to customer, regulatory, and business objectives.
Allocate requirements across hardware, mechanical, manufacturing, and test disciplines.
Partner closely with Firmware and Software Architects to ensure alignment of architectures, interfaces, technology roadmaps, and performance objectives.
Define sensing, signal acquisition, processing, communications, timing, storage, and power architectures for complex embedded systems.
Lead architecture reviews, design reviews, and technical governance activities throughout the product lifecycle.
Develop platform strategies that maximise technology reuse across multiple product families.
Support New Product Introduction (NPI), sustaining engineering, obsolescence management, and product enhancement initiatives.
Identify technical risks early, develop mitigation strategies, and provide leadership during complex technical investigations.
Support strategic customer engagements, technical due diligence activities, and key technology partnerships.
Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence through standards, best practices, and technical leadership.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience developing embedded hardware products, with significant experience leading complex technical projects.
Proven experience defining and delivering system architectures for embedded products from concept through production and lifecycle support.
Strong understanding of mixed-signal electronics, embedded processors, communications interfaces, networking technologies, and industrial instrumentation.
Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements management, architecture decomposition, interface definition, verification strategy, and technical risk management.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical decision-making across multidisciplinary teams.
Experience balancing technical, commercial, manufacturing, quality, and programme considerations.
Strong communication, stakeholder management, and technical leadership skills.
Ability to influence and guide engineering teams without direct line management responsibility.
Preferred Skills
Experience architecting ARM-based embedded systems, Linux platforms, real-time systems, and FPGA-based solutions.
Experience with power system monitoring, protection, fault recording, power quality, synchrophasor, condition monitoring, or substation automation products.
Knowledge of IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-104, and other industrial communication protocols.
Experience with precision timing technologies including GPS, GNSS, IRIG-B, IEEE 1588 PTP, and NTP.
Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and standards applicable to critical infrastructure, including IEC 62443.
Experience with EMC compliance, electrical safety standards, environmental qualification, CE, UL, IEC, and IEEE requirements.
Understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Serviceability (DFS), and reliability engineering principles.
Experience supporting supply chain, component lifecycle management, and obsolescence planning.
Familiarity with hardware simulation, modelling, and validation methodologies.
Experience developing common product platforms deployed across multiple product generations and product families.
Leadership Expectations
In this role you will be recognised as a senior technical leader and architectural authority within the organisation.
You will be expected to:
Provide system architecture leadership across multiple projects and product families.
Serve as the primary technical authority for hardware and system architecture decisions.
Collaborate with Firmware and Software Architects to deliver cohesive, integrated solutions while respecting ownership boundaries between disciplines.
Drive engineering excellence through technical reviews, standards, and governance processes.
Influence long-term technology strategies and platform roadmaps.
Mentor hardware engineers and develop future technical leaders.
Champion innovation while maintaining focus on product quality, reliability, maintainability, and customer value.
