The News Literacy Project, founded in 2008, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building a national movement to ensure that all students are guaranteed to be skilled in news literacy before high school graduation, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers. Where you fit in
The News Literacy Project empowers educators to teach middle and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. We are at an exciting inflection point for our work, and we are making critical investments to rapidly scale our growth and impact. To that end, we are seeking the organization's first Chief Technology Officer to lead technology and product functions under NLP’s strategic vision as we scale Checkology's reach nationwide. This is a great opportunity for you to shape the technology foundation of a national movement and directly expand access to news literacy education for hundreds of thousands of students. We're looking for someone who can have an immediate and meaningful impact on our work.
This position reports to the President and CEO.
About the position
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) serves as the organization's senior technology leader, responsible for technology vision, platform delivery, digital innovation, operational reliability and technology governance across the organization. The CTO ensures technology investments advance mission impact, support sustainable growth and meet the security, privacy and compliance expectations of K-12 school districts and institutional partners.
The CTO serves as a member of the Executive Team and partners closely with the CEO, COO and functional leaders to translate strategy into technology priorities and measurable outcomes.
Specifically, in this job, you will:
Technology Strategy & Governance
- Develop and execute a multi-year technology strategy aligned with organizational and programmatic and product priorities.
- Establish technology principles, governance processes and investment priorities across product and enterprise systems, including annual roadmaps and technology operating and capital budgets tied to organizational outcomes.
- Advise executive leadership and the Board on technology opportunities, risks,infrastructure and digital transformation.
- Chair the internal AI Committee,setting the organization's AI vision, enablement strategy and governing policies.
- Ensure technology governance processes account for and support the organization's data strategy, in partnership with data leadership.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and determine where innovation meaningfully advances mission and user value.
Product Leadership
- Strategic thinker who balances long-term vision with operational execution and leads effectively through change.
- Strong product mindset with a focus on user experience, customer outcomes and measurable impact.
- Exceptional communicator who translates complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences, executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Demonstrated success building, developing and retaining high-performing teams.
- Excellent judgment in prioritizing competing organizational needs and allocating resources effectively.
Compensation and benefits
The starting salary for this position is $225,000, but negotiable depending on the candidate's qualifications, experience and our organizational budget. Work Samples
As part of your application, please upload two to three work samples that demonstrate your experience in the following areas. A single sample may cover more than one area.
- Technology or product roadmap. A roadmap you developed and executed, along with the context, how you prioritized competing needs and what outcomes resulted.
- Data privacy and compliance. An example of how you worked through a data privacy agreement, district security review or similar compliance process, such as a policy you authored, a review response or a summary of your approach and its outcome.
- AI leadership. An artifact showing how you led an organization, district or company through AI adoption or governance, such as an AI policy, committee charter, enablement strategy for board presentation.
For each sample, please include a short summary (a few sentences) telling us what we're looking at, which area or areas it addresses and your specific role in creating it.

A sanitized excerpt or a one-page written summary of your approach is acceptable where the original work product cannot be shared. Samples will be evaluated on clarity of thinking, judgment and communication rather than visual polish.

Our hiring process
Candidates selected to participate will be invited to an initial phone screen and up to three rounds of virtual interviews, conducted with pairs and small groups of NLP leaders and stakeholders.
Finalists will be asked to provide references.
