Scheduled Work Times/Locations

Monday – Friday, 8:30AM – 4:30PM 118 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06106, will work at other sites. May need to occasionally work evening and weekends as directed by Team Supervisor.

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Facilities Team Supervisor, the Maintenance Tech II-III works across several CHA sites to keep premises in safe, clean, and orderly condition. The Maintenance Tech II-III will perform repair and maintenance projects, including basic carpentry, HVAC maintenance, plumbing, and painting. This position will also perform some routine cleaning and heavy manual labor, such as moving furniture, equipment, kitchen trash and other heavy items. The ideal candidate will bring the following qualifications: • Relevant work experience in facilities maintenance or construction • Basic knowledge of household power tools • Enthusiastic, friendly, and willing to learn • Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs. • Clean driving record and ability to travel to multiple sites within Hartford. • Dependability—the individual is consistently at work and on time, follows instructions and responds to management direction.


About CHA: Community Housing Advocates (CHA) is the parent company of Mercy Housing and Shelter and My Sisters’ Place, who joined forces in 2018. For over forty years, these two agencies have provided housing assistance and supportive services to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. CHA works to empower its clients to become independent, so they may live and work with dignity and respect. CHA also seeks to end homelessness by advocating for changes in the social systems that perpetuate homelessness. CHA hosts multiple housing sites offering short-term and long-term housing for individuals and families. Through these sites and its related programs, CHA has helped thousands of people in our community, providing them with a warm place to stay, food for themselves and their children, and services that are designed to get them back onto the road to independence—including medical care, management of financial affairs, and much, much more.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform and/or assist in routine repair and maintenance work, including basic carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, and painting.
  •  Perform heavy manual labor, such as moving furniture, equipment, kitchen trash and other heavy items.
  •  Perform routine cleaning at agency sites as needed.
  •  Follow safe working practices and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  •  Follow schedule for routine cleaning of grounds, including some light landscaping, grounds work and snow removal.
  •  Accurately and consistently enter hours and notes into the work order management system.
  •  Immediately report hazardous, deteriorating conditions or general repair needs to the Facilities Manager and take action as required to avert danger or further damage.
  •  Keep the walks, drives and all outside areas clean and safe for employees, residents, and visitors.
  •  Inform Supervisor when supplies are needed.
  •  Respond, on call for emergency needs at agency facilities, as directed by the Supervisor.
  •  Record work performed and other updates in the maintenance work order system.
  •  Perform any other task that will assist the agency in carrying out its mission as requested.

This position is classified as ESSENTIAL; therefore, the employee must report for work when scheduled or called in, regardless of weather or other conditions that affect travel, and remain on duty until relieved by the supervisor, or until the end of the normal workday, or until the end of the immediate need as determined by the supervisor. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to respond to emergency situations or assist with agency events.

  •  Demonstrate good communication with clients, supervisors, peers, volunteers, and other outside resources.
  •  Demonstrate good attendance.
  •  Punctually attend all assigned meetings, in-services, and trainings.
  •  Demonstrate involvement as a team member.
  •  Adhere to all applicable regulations, laws and policies/procedures and know and understand one’s job description.
  •  Submit paperwork and meet job responsibility deadlines as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:  One year technical school; or one to three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. High school diploma or GED equivalent expected.

Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Basic computer proficiency expected (i.e., Microsoft Word, Email, Outlook.)

Certificates, licenses, Registrations

Must have valid Connecticut driver’s license and a clean driving record with proof of automobile insurance. Must have a vehicle in good working condition.

Compensation and Benefits:

  •  $23 per hour, based on experience plus generous incentive compensation plan.
  •  Community Housing Advocates provides a generous employee benefits package, including medical, dental, retirement, short- and long-term disability, and tuition reimbursement. Full-time employees receive 10 days of PTO (paid time off) per year, plus 11 paid holidays and one (1) Floating Holiday and 40 Hours of Accrued Paid Sick Leave.

Must be able to climb a ladder, lift up to one hundred pounds, and perform other physical tasks associated with the essential job functions such as moving furniture, using a lawn mower, weed whacker, shoveling snow and other similar tasks.
