Full job description

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Production and Technical Director

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

Lyric Opera of Chicago is where the world sings — and where Chicago comes alive.

Under the leadership of General Director, President & CEO John Mangum and Music Director Enrique Mazzola, Lyric stands at the intersection of artistic excellence and civic purpose, harnessing the full power of opera — voice, orchestra, stagecraft, and story — to illuminate the questions, emotions, and experiences that define us as human beings.

Nearly 75 seasons of world-class performances have made Lyric one of the greatest opera companies in the world. What drives us now is what has always driven us: the belief that this art form, at its best, can move people in ways nothing else can. Lyric is also Chicago’s partner — in its neighborhoods, its schools, and its communities — through education, engagement, and a relentless commitment to making opera accessible, relevant, and irresistible to everyone. At the heart of that commitment is The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, which trains the artists who will carry this art form into its future. Every night when the curtain rises, Lyric reminds this city — and the world — why live performance still matters.

Lyric Opera of Chicago doesn’t just present opera, it redefines what opera can be. It’s where Chicago comes to be moved — come inside.

Under the supervision of the Vice President, Production and Technical Director, the Technical Finance Manager is responsible for the processing and reviewing of all financial activity as it pertains to the Technical Department. This position will be a regular liaison with Lyric’s Finance and Payroll departments. This person will play a key role in ensuring the ongoing and accurate processing and review of all technical department financial transactions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate leadership in alignment with Lyric’s mission and vision.
  • Under CBA work rules, process, and audit weekly timesheets for all IATSE backstage personnel (stagehands, wardrobe, wigs & makeup, and scenic artist) in collaboration with the Payroll department.
  • Create and manage weekly labor tracking reports based on productions.
  • Generate and manage itemized, detailed expense reports by opera production.
  • Code, track, and report all other non-production related Tech expenses.
  • Work with the Finance Department to track budget variances within the current season.
  • Work with the Finance Department to develop and phase future season technical budgets.
  • Process outside vendor invoicing.
  • Work with the Technical department to reconcile department credit cards and petty cash.
  • Review and create vendor agreements as necessary.
  • Member of IATSE contract negotiations team.
  • Contribute to the overall success of Lyric by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in an applicable area of work specifically working within Finance.
  • Exceptional knowledge of excel.
  • Experience with accounting software platforms.
  • Background in the entertainment or non-profit sector is ideal but not required.
  • Experience working with unions and/or collective bargaining agreements is helpful, but not required.
  • Must have effective organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to work and think independently, a motivated self-starter who works well in a larger team.

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet business needs.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job with or without accommodations.

COMPENSATION:

Job Classification: Full-time, Exempt

Application Deadline: Friday, July 10, 2026 (5:00pm CT)

Salary Range is $62,000-$70,000
