The Grant Writer plays a critical role in supporting Greenpeace's mission by developing compelling grant applications and major gift proposals to fund Greenpeace projects both in the Southeast Asia region and globally. This position is instrumental in securing funding through meticulous research, writing, and coordination efforts, focusing on foundations, high-net-worth individuals, and other major funding sources.

This is a fixed-term position based in either Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Candidates who have the legal right to work and live in the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Grant Writer at Greenpeace Southeast Asia (GPSEA) serves as a linchpin in conceptualizing strategies for securing financial support crucial for the organization's environmental initiatives. This role is central to envisioning and articulating compelling narratives that resonate with the values and priorities of potential donors, aligning Greenpeace's mission with the philanthropic goals of major gifts foundations. Through strategic grant writing, the Grant Writer translates Greenpeace's environmental campaigns and objectives into actionable projects that garner the support and resources necessary for their realization.
  • In practical terms, the Grant Writer is responsible for the stewardship and donor engagement and acquisition processes, from crafting high-quality donor engagement materials to managing all related stewardship and administrative tasks. This includes developing a deep understanding of Greenpeace's projects and objectives, tailoring proposals to meet the specific criteria of different funding bodies, and ensuring that all grant applications and reports are submitted with accuracy and precision, thereby directly contributing to the financial sustainability of Greenpeace's environmental endeavors.
  • The Grant Writer collaborates closely with various teams within Greenpeace, including Major Gifts, Foundation staff, and program teams, to ensure a cohesive and coordinated approach to grant writing. This role involves working hand-in-hand with campaigners to grasp the intricacies of Greenpeace's initiatives, ensuring that proposals accurately reflect and support the organization's mission. Additionally, the Grant Writer plays a key role in capacity building, equipping staff across departments with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively to the grant acquisition process.
  • Externally, the Grant Writer engages with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including donors, foundations, and philanthropic entities, to build and maintain relationships that are vital for fundraising efforts. This role requires a proactive approach to understanding the interests and preferences of potential funders, tailoring communication and proposals to align with their priorities, and establishing Greenpeace as a worthy recipient of their support.
  • The Grant Writer is responsible for managing a comprehensive calendar of grant opportunities and reporting deadlines, ensuring that all submissions are prepared and delivered on time. This includes prioritizing tasks, coordinating with internal teams, and maintaining a proactive approach to meeting all deadlines, thereby maximizing Greenpeace's opportunities for funding.
  • Quality in grant writing encompasses the accuracy of information, the persuasiveness of narratives, and the alignment of proposals with donor requirements and Greenpeace's mission. The Grant Writer is tasked with producing well-researched, clearly written, and compelling grant applications that effectively communicate the value and impact of Greenpeace's work. This includes meticulous attention to detail, a deep understanding of both Greenpeace's objectives and the donor's priorities, and a commitment to excellence in every aspect of the proposal process.

Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in a relevant field of Communications, Environmental Studies, Non-Profit Management or equivalent experience.
  • Passion for the environment and a strong commitment to the aims and values of Greenpeace.
  • At least three years’ experience in writing grant proposals and / or reporting. Provide writing samples in English.
  • Fundraising or sales copywriting experience.
  • Exemplary organizational skills including the ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, track information, work to a timeline and achieve targeted goals.
  • Good communication skills across different channels and departments, including strong listening and negotiation skills, proven ability to support and guide colleagues
  • Excellent English, and other languages are an advantage.
  • Proven experience in grant writing, with a successful track record of securing grants and major gifts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with a keen eye for identifying funding opportunities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and coordinate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Commitment to Greenpeace's core values and understanding of environmental and conservation issues.

Work Experience:

  • Experience of developing and delivering successful fundraising proposals for high level donors, and will excel at being able to write and communicate differently and effectively, according to the needs of a range of audiences – from trusts and foundations to celebrities and major donors.
  • Experience delivering stewardship content (both for mail and email) that effectively supports donor retention, communicating impact in a way that inspires ongoing support and increased loyalty and interest in Greenpeace.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills which enable us to produce exciting, innovative content as part of our campaigns that builds an amazing story that excites existing key supporters and attracts new people.
  • Demonstrate good project management skills, being able to plan project work in a structured way that allows others to understand what will be delivered and when – including experience planning and managing supporter events.
  • Good understanding of prospect research techniques and processes.
  • Ability to demonstrate times when you’ve taken responsibility for spotting and solving problems, and when you’ve shown a proactive approach to coming up with new ideas to innovate or improve a team’s work.
  • Support and be able to champion Greenpeace ideals and values, including our commitments to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
