Full job description

Senior Software Engineer

Department: Engineering

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Remote (select US states)

Reporting To: Vlad Semak

Compensation: $150,236 - $169,147 / year

Description

We are looking for a thoughtful, collaborative Senior Software Engineer to join our growing, distributed team at Coforma.

Our Software Engineers enjoy tackling complex problems and working with other members of our cross-disciplinary teams to deliver elegant products across a modern technology stack. They are skilled experts across the stack, building accessible applications that put people first with code that is clean, maintainable, well-documented, and well-tested.

In this role, you'll work closely with internal colleagues and external counterparts, collaborating through development and issue resolution by evaluating trade-offs and presenting options for different approaches to clients and project stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a knack for translating and communicating complex technical concepts in everyday terms to non-technical audiences. Your passion for articulating how to execute in the pursuit of doing what’s right is a feature, not a bug, and will ensure that the software we build makes a positive impact on peoples’ lives.

Join us and help create human-centered solutions that we can be proud to say we worked on together. If you’re passionate about improving lives through digital products and services, Coforma is a great company for you.

$150,235 to $169,146 Annual Salary + Benefits + Growth Potential
Placement within this range will be based on the competency level of the candidate. An offer will be made at one of the following tiers:
  • Tier 1 — $150,235.80: Meets stated qualification and experience requirements. May need guidance and training beyond onboarding to perform the more complex functions of the role.
  • Tier 2 — $159,691.20: Experienced and fully competent. Will be able to independently perform key responsibilities of the role once onboarding is completed.
  • Tier 3 — $169,146.60: Highly experienced and can perform all responsibilities of the role at a higher level than expected once onboarding is completed.
To honor our company-wide equitable pay system, the posted salary range and corresponding tier salaries are non-negotiable.

This is a US-based remote position open to applicants in the states listed below. Some travel may be required.

To ensure we remain compliant with all state, county, and local employment and tax regulations, applicants must currently reside in one of the following states to be considered for employment with Coforma. This list will be updated periodically as our PeopleOps team works to open up hiring in additional states.
  • Arizona
  • California
  • District of Columbia
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Write and review code, ensuring high standards of quality, maintainability, and test coverage
  • Solve problems across the tech stack alongside other engineers and cross-functional team members, building new systems and improving existing ones
  • Engage with coworkers across disciplines according to Agile and Scrum methodologies, including participating in planning, breaking down requirements into tasks, refinement and estimation, etc.
  • Articulate the risks, benefits, and trade-offs associated with different technical approaches to stakeholders using your influence to build consensus and keep work moving forward
  • Mentor junior engineers on software development, engineering, and accessibility best practices
  • Participate in the hiring and onboarding process as needed

In Your First 30 Days, You Will:
  • Meet the client team and the people who use what you're building, including content editors
  • Get oriented on observability tooling and triage a real production alert
  • Learn the delivery workflow — CI/CD pipeline, branching and code review norms, and the path to production
  • Build working knowledge of our accessibility standard (WCAG 2.2 AA) and the automated checks that enforce it in CI
  • Get a local development environment running across the frontend, API, and database; run the test suite and reproduce a bug locally
  • Ship your first production changes: well-scoped bug fixes, dependency and vulnerability remediation, or contained accessibility defects

After 60 Days:
  • Begin writing your own acceptance and validation criteria as opposed to waiting for a checklist
  • Take end-to-end ownership of a feature including design, implementation, testing, and release
  • Deliver a defined phase of an active workstream, with the measurement in place to know whether it worked
  • Take a production issue from alert to root cause to merged fix without hand-holding
  • Review teammates' pull requests with substance, catching accessibility and data-integrity issues
  • Contribute at least one durable improvement to the test suite or CI pipeline

After 90 Days:
  • Actively engage with client stakeholders as an Engineering representative from Coforma in at least one working session
  • Lead a workstream phase: sequencing, risk calls, and the go/no-go recommendation for your piece
  • Own deployment and rollback for your own work, including knowing the criteria to revert
  • Produce a written technical recommendation on an open architecture question, with tradeoffs and a clear position
  • Debug across system boundaries, including services outside your primary language and stack
  • Contribute to and improve onboarding documentation for future engineers joining the team

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Requirements

Who You Are:
  • A multifaceted engineer with a minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience, preferably within SaaS companies operating in highly regulated environments
  • A skilled communicator (verbal, written, and/or with the use of assistive tech) with the ability to effectively translate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences, including client and project stakeholders
  • A full-time resident of the contiguous United States (must be legally authorized to work in the US now and in the future without sponsorship)
  • Able to pass a Public Trust background check and any applicable background and/or security checks related to project requirements

What You Know and What You've Done:
  • The building blocks of the web, including how to write accessible semantic HTML and how to write clean CSS that conforms to design systems
  • Proven experience with CMS migrations (specifically Drupal 11 migration expertise), GraphQL schema modeling, and rich-text HTML conversion
  • Proficiency in SAST/DAST scanning and vulnerability remediation
  • Strong frontend and backend development skills (specifically TypeScript and Lambda architecture)
  • Experience with CloudFormation, cost monitoring, and CI/CD pipeline optimization
  • Knowledge and understanding of WCAG 2.2 AA standards and experience implementing automated accessibility testing
  • Knowledge and understanding of Agile and Scrum development methodologies

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
  • Frameworks, libraries, and runtimes including React, Rails, Node, Next, Angular, and/or Spring
  • Testing frameworks (Jest, Testing Library, Mocha, Playwright, and/or Cypress)
  • APIs and databases (SQL, Dynamo, Mongo, and/or Postgres)
  • Infrastructure as Code and infrastructure tools (Terraform, Serverless, Amazon CDK, etc.)
  • Prior experience developing software in remote, distributed environments
  • Prior experience working in digital services, government, or government contracting

Other

  • Internet: Will prioritize and maintain access to strong, reliable internet for the remote nature of our work, except when on vacation or holiday.
  • Security: Will keep the highest security practices to ensure privacy and security of Coforma and client information, given the nature of our work, even when on vacation.
  • Travel Flexibility: On request and with advanced notice, will attend in-person events such as meetings, workshops, and trainings as assigned for projects that require it.
  • Brand Representation: Will represent Coforma professionally and sincerely, modeling our Company Values in all interactions.
