Summary:
The Pipelayer is responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining underground piping systems for water, sewer, storm drainage, and other utilities on civil construction projects. This position requires expertise in reading blueprints, trench safety, pipe installation, and backfilling. The Pipelayer will work as part of a team to ensure that all pipework is installed correctly, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and safety regulations.
Responsibilities:
Lay and install various types of underground piping, including storm drains, sanitary sewer lines, and water mains.
Read and interpret construction blueprints, specifications, and project plans to determine pipe installation requirements.
Perform excavation and trenching activities following OSHA safety regulations.
Ensure proper alignment, grade, and sealing of pipes using lasers, levels, and other measuring equipment.
Connect pipes using appropriate methods such as sealing joints, welding, or using gaskets and fittings.
Backfill trenches and restore work areas upon completion of installations.
Operate and use hand tools and power tools such as pipe saws, tampers, and trench shoring equipment.
Work closely with equipment operators, foremen, and laborers to ensure smooth installation.
Troubleshoot and repair pipeline issues such as leaks or misalignments.
Maintain a clean and organized worksite, ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.
Assist in rigging and setting heavy pipes into place using hoists, cranes, or other lifting equipment.
Adhere to company policies, safety guidelines, and project deadlines.
Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in underground utilities, pipeline installation, or a similar construction trade.
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron, HDPE, etc.), trench safety, and pipe-laying techniques.
Equipment Use: Familiarity with trench boxes, pipe lasers, and compaction equipment.
Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, survey stakes, and project drawings.
Safety Compliance: Knowledge of OSHA standards related to excavation and underground construction.
Physical Stamina: Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., bend, kneel, stand for long periods, and work in various weather conditions.
Team Player: Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment with a crew.
Certifications (Preferred): OSHA 10 or 30, Confined Space Entry, and competent person training for trench safety.
Driver's License: A valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites.
Physical Demands & Work Conditions:
Work in outdoor construction environments, including exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, mud, and noisy conditions.
Ability to work in deep trenches and confined spaces.
Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and working in physically demanding conditions.
Work may require overtime, weekends, or extended shifts based on project needs.
