Join a professional maritime engineering team as a Second Engineer on board our fleet of vessels. This role is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and reliability of the main and auxiliary machinery, oversight of engineering watchkeeping, support for planned and emergency repairs, adherence to safety and environmental standards, and contribution to the vessel’s technical readiness and compliance with international and company regulations. The Second Engineer will report to the Chief Engineer and Master and work collaboratively with the engineering team and other shipboard departments.
Primary Responsibilities for Second Engineer - machinery, watchkeeping, safety
The role of the Second Engineer is to assist the 1st Engineer and the Chief Engineer in the safe and efficient management of the Engine Department.
The primary function of the Second Engineer is to supervise the operations and maintenance of all machinery including the ballast system and plant onboard.
Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The supervision of the planned maintenance and of repairs.
Responsible for the chemical treatment of fresh and salt water.
Responsible for the safety and integrity of the engine department and that relevant procedures are followed. They are to ensure that all work in the engine department is carried out in a safe and efficient manner. Requests from the Deck Officer on watch to carry out trim changes and routine tank level adjustments should be considered benevolently and executed if the Deck Officer is occupied with other important duties. Requests to operate the ballast system and to log movements in the ballast log shall be given by the Deck Officer on watch and under their responsibility for the stability of the vessel.
Responsibilities also include reporting as required by Integrated Management System.
Maintains a daily work record of all maintenance and work carried out in the machinery spaces.
Responsible to the Chief Engineer for the daily movements of all fuel, lubricating and hydraulic oil and fresh water.
Overall, in charge of the cleanliness of the engine room spaces.
The safekeeping of an engine room watches as directed by the Chief Engineer.
Operating anchor handling and towing winches as and when assigned by the Chief Engineer. (Offshore)
The testing of all emergency stand-by machinery and recording such tests in the Engine Room Logbook as directed by the Chief Engineer.
Ensuring that all personnel on board are aware of how to operate emergency stand-by equipment.
Conduct fuel and lubricating oil quantities measurements, sample storage and arranging for analysis with the assigned Company Technical Superintendent as and when required.
Assisting the Chief Engineer with bunkering and transfer of bunkers.
Monitoring cooling water efficiency and regularly maintaining the system.
The general condition and maintenance of steering gear, air conditioning etc.
Any additional duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
Ensuring that all Engine room Staff wear proper PPE at all times.
Required Qualifications - engineering certification, experience, medical fitness
Certificate of Competency as per STCW reg III/2
STCW endorsements
Valid Medical certificate
DP Maintenance Course (where applicable)
DP experience as per IMCA M 117 (where applicable)
Minimum 12 months of experience in rank and similar type of vessel
Experience with AHTS or offshore support vessel engineering operations, including dynamic positioning (DP) systems and high-power propulsion plant management.
Training or certification in marine engineering automation, refrigeration, high-voltage systems, DP maintenance, or specialized machinery courses is advantageous.
Demonstrated ability to use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), technical publications, and OEM manuals to support maintenance planning and fault diagnosis.
Strong communication, decision-making, and supervisory skills with the ability to lead engineering teams, mentor junior crew, and coordinate with shoreside technical staff.
Work Environment & Conditions - seafaring life, rotations, safety
Seagoing engineering position with rotational deployments; assignments may include extended periods onboard with defined on/off rotation schedules and standby periods.
Work in engine rooms and machinery spaces with exposure to noise, heat, fuels, lubricants, and moving machinery; ability to operate safely during adverse weather, confined spaces, and during night shifts when required.
Must comply with medical fitness standards, vaccinations, and company pre-employment screening requirements.
