Full job description

Ready to make your impact?

We back your potential. This role gives you the chance to stretch your skills, learn from experts and grow your impact in a business that values your contribution and is committed to your development.

Looking to make a bigger contribution? Here’s an opportunity to do just that

As Group Leader, Secondary Engineering, you’ll lead a high-performing team of protection and control engineers, playing a key role in delivering critical transmission substation and lines projects that help power Victoria’s future.

You’ll guide your team in providing expert engineering and technical support across the project lifecycle, working closely with primary and civil/structural engineering teams as well as a broad network of internal and external stakeholders. Together, you’ll ensure designs are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard, supporting reliable and sustainable energy outcomes for our communities.

Reporting to the Manager, Design Management, this role sits within the Transmission Delivery team and is based in Southbank, placing you at the heart of shaping how we deliver infrastructure that enables the energy transition

This role will deliver real outcomes, including but not limited to:

  • Provide leadership, coaching and direction to a team of protection and control engineers, building capability and ensuring successful delivery of secondary engineering outcomes.
  • Oversee the management and delivery of high-quality secondary designs across transmission projects, ensuring outputs meet scope, quality, timing and safety expectations.
  • Review and guide complex protection and control designs (including schemes, control systems and relay settings), acting as a technical authority on critical engineering issues.
  • Ensure scopes, specifications and deliverables are clearly defined and that Design Delivery Partners produce high-quality, compliant outputs aligned to standards and project requirements.
  • Work closely with primary, civil/structural teams, Project Managers and broader stakeholders to ensure designs are well-integrated, constructible and aligned to project needs.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate technical risks, while driving efficient, cost-effective solutions including opportunities for design optimisation and standards deviations where appropriate.

You don’t need to check every box; however, we are looking for a good combination of:

  • Register Engineer in Victoria (RPEV) required (at least eligibility)
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Detailed technical knowledge and extensive experience in electricity networks engineering with sound understanding of multi-disciplinary issues
  • Deep technical knowledge and experience in the field of secondary engineering, particularly protection and control of substations and transmission lines
  • Able to simplify complex engineering analysis for non-engineers (eg summarising key decision-making during delivery of detailed design)
  • Advanced commercial acumen, stakeholder engagement and understanding of network constraints to identify appropriate solutions to address the needs of the network and customers.
  • Detailed understanding of project lifecycles and application of engineering principals with extensive design and construction knowledge covering performance, functionality, operation, maintenance and risks

The AusNet experience is all about…

  • Solving some of the most complex energy challenges of our time: We love unpacking complex challenges in clever ways and looking at things differently.
  • When life happens, knowing we’ve got your back: Whether it's life's big moments or the unexpected little ones, we get it - sometimes you just need to be there.
  • Being part of a team that cares deeply about each other: We share in the good times. We support in the tough times. And we’re humble through and through.

We’re committed to building an inclusive culture and a diverse workforce. We believe different perspectives are essential to our success, and we encourage all applicants to apply. If you need any adjustments during the recruitment process, we're happy to discuss how we can support you.
