Full job description

Inspire young musicians through ensemble performance.

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula seeks warm, accomplished, and collaborative music educators to lead one or more middle and high school performing ensembles. We believe music is a vital part of a young person's intellectual, emotional, and social development, and we seek teachers who cultivate technical excellence while inspiring students to experience music as a collaborative, expressive, and deeply human art.

This position is ideal for professional musicians, conductors, music educators, or teaching artists who enjoy working with adolescents and fostering a joyful, disciplined, and inclusive rehearsal environment. Whether leading a beginning wind ensemble or an advanced jazz group, successful candidates will help students grow as musicians while strengthening their confidence, creativity, and capacity for collaboration.

Available Ensembles

One or more of the following ensembles may be assigned based on the successful candidate's expertise:

Middle School

  • Concert Band (Brass, Woodwinds, and Percussion)

High School

  • Jazz Band
  • Guitar Ensemble

Schedule

Each ensemble rehearses twice weekly on either:

  • Monday & Wednesday, or
  • Tuesday & Thursday

Class Times

  • Middle School Band: 1:25–2:15 p.m. (M/W)
  • High School Ensembles: 2:20–3:10 p.m. (M/W or T/R)

Depending on the number of ensembles assigned, this position may range from approximately 2 to 6 instructional hours per week, with additional compensated time for planning, concerts, and faculty collaboration as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct engaging, well-paced ensemble rehearsals.
  • Develop students' technical skills, musicianship, listening, and ensemble awareness.
  • Foster a positive rehearsal culture rooted in respect, curiosity, and artistic excellence.
  • Select and prepare repertoire appropriate to students' developmental levels and ensemble goals.
  • Prepare students for concerts and other school performances.
  • Encourage confidence, leadership, and collaborative music-making among adolescents.
  • Collaborate with fellow music faculty and school administration to support a cohesive performing arts program.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Track student progress and engagement and complete assessments and write reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Experience directing instrumental and/or vocal ensembles.
  • Strong conducting, rehearsal, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to inspire and engage middle and high school students.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the listed ensemble areas.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in independent schools or youth ensemble programs.
  • Familiarity with Waldorf education or an interest in learning about Waldorf pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach multiple ensemble types.

Compensation

Compensation for this position ranges from $29 to $58 per hour, with separate hourly rates applicable for teaching and non-teaching responsibilities.

We’re an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, age, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
