Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills to address real-world challenges. CAS staff and managers are integral to this work, playing vital roles in supporting academic excellence and advancing the mission of both the College and the University.

The University of Oregon and the Department of English are committed to creating a more inclusive and diverse institution and seek candidates excited to contribute positively to its diverse community. The English Department houses the Composition Program, which serves close to 7,000 undergraduate students each year.

Position Summary

We invite applicants who have experience with and enthusiasm for teaching composition to first-year students to apply for our Pro Tem instructor open pool. Pro Tem Instructor appointees will primarily teach undergraduate composition courses in the department of English. Candidates should demonstrate experience with best practices in writing pedagogy, inclusive teaching practices, and ability to support first-year student success. Positions are limited duration appointments potentially renewable for up to a total of three years, based on programmatic need, funding, and performance. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.

Occasional courses in film and media, lower-division literature (Introduction to Drama, Poetry, or Fiction, Shakespeare, British or American surveys), and folklore may be available depending on department needs. Advising students in office hours and participation in program assessment as part of teaching duties are expectations of the appointments. Pro Tem Faculty are expected to attend Composition Conference and Composition Program meetings, as their teaching schedules allow.

Minimum Requirements

• M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field.
• Three (3) terms or two (2) semesters of experience teaching composition or writing-intensive courses to undergraduates.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Training and experience teaching multimodal composition.
• Experience using Canvas or another LMS to support in-person instruction.
• A Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field.
