Open Rank Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor (Full-Time) – Emergency Dental Services / Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic
The University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is seeking applications for a full-time faculty member at the rank of Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor. This unique faculty position is divided between emergency dental care and special care & geriatric dentistry, with resident education component within an interdisciplinary academic environment.
The clinical responsibilities will be shared between the Emergency Dental Services (EDS) Clinic and the Special Care & Geriatrics Clinic (SC&G).
Responsibilities in the Emergency Dental Services Clinic include providing comprehensive emergency dental care for patients presenting with acute oral health conditions. The faculty member will evaluate, diagnose, and manage dental emergencies, develop treatment plans, and provide definitive or palliative treatment as appropriate. Clinical procedures may include dentoalveolar surgery, surgical and non-surgical extractions, incision and drainage of odontogenic infections when indicated, emergency restorative procedures, and other treatments necessary to stabilize acute dental conditions.
Special Care & Geriatrics clinic responsibilities include supervising dental students in the clinic as they provide dental care to patients special health care needs, such as disabilities and medical complexities, and patients over the age of 65. Clinical procedures may include comprehensive care, restorative treatment, periodontal therapy, extractions, as well as treatment with nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and behavior management. The successful candidate should be comfortable working with complex patient populations, treatment of patients with anxiolysis, and supervisory skills for working with students.
The successful candidate should possess sufficient experience in outpatient dentoalveolar surgery to supervise Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents in the management of routine dentoalveolar procedures and dental emergencies. The faculty member will provide direct supervision and clinical instruction to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents and in the Emergency Dental Services Clinic, fostering an educational environment that promotes evidence-based practice and high-quality patient care.
Additional responsibilities include, coordinating referrals to specialty clinics, maintaining complete and accurate clinical documentation, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and contributing to departmental, school, and university service activities as appropriate.
Candidates must possess a DDS, DMD, or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice dentistry in the State of Maryland.
Completion of an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), General Practice Residency (GPR), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency, or equivalent advanced clinical training is preferred. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in the management of dental emergencies and competency in outpatient dentoalveolar surgery. Previous experience in academic dentistry and clinical teaching of residents and/or dental students is highly desirable.
