Job Title: Group Exercise Instructor

SCHEDULE: Varying hours needed, please see class types and schedule under the Job Summary below. Other hours may vary based on instructor availability, and these classes may be adjusted based on candidate strengths and background.

PAY RATE: $35-45/hr, DOE

The MJCC is open to everyone of all backgrounds!

We provide a fun, team work environment and the chance to get to know and assist a diverse range of staff and members. Free membership and program discounts are included for every employee and we encourage all our staff to enjoy our comprehensive facilities and programming. Our facilities include a full-size gymnasium with basketball courts and a rock climbing wall, a fully-equipped fitness center, racquetball courts, and an indoor sportsplex that boasts a soccer field and robust soccer leagues, an indoor playground, and a gymnastics area. 

JOB SUMMARY: The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible to provide group fitness instruction in a class setting.  Our current needs are primarily focused on:

  • Wednesdays 12:30 PM: Align & Flow: A gentle breath-led class combining postural support and fluid movement
  • Thursdays 6:30 PM: HIIT or similar style class
  • Thursdays 5:30 PM: The Body Shop: Balance, Strength, Flexibility. A hybrid training focusing on functional movement, total body conditioning and HIIT training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These examples represent the essential functions of the position. They are not, however, inclusive of all the duties the position may be assigned to perform.)

  • Provide class instruction; begin and end class as scheduled. Provide adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching, and cool down. Encourage and support members and guests to participate at the level of their ability. Supervise program participants and ensure classroom and/or activity is safe for participants and instructor.
  • Develop complete lesson plans as requested by supervisor. Prepare appropriate equipment, music and written information. Maintain class roster and any associated class records.
  • Orient class participants to all equipment used in the class; instruct class in the safe operation of equipment. Instruct class participants in how to move safely within the limits of their abilities.
  • Check out equipment and return it to the proper storage area. Turn off all equipment at the end of class, return the activity area to its proper order, and properly secure activity area.
  • Provide excellent customer service. Provide information specific to fitness center programs, and general information about MJCC operations. Answer questions and address concerns within scope of authority.
  • Keep Wellness Programs & Engagement Manager informed of needs, questions, and changes of the clientele. Enforce facility and fitness program policies. Attend periodic staff meetings as scheduled.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying. This would typically include:

  • Current certifications in First Aid, CPR and AED (required).
  • Six months’ experience assisting customers in group exercise classes.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation of strength training and cardiovascular equipment; general knowledge of body mechanics and anatomy (preferred).
  • Background in HIIT training, weight training, functional movement and pilates/yoga.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS + WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed in a fitness center/studio and require the ability to set up equipment and move quickly throughout the facility. This involves lifting up to 30 pounds, pushing, pulling, gripping, bending, stooping, walking and running.
