Role overview
The Commissioning Engineeris responsible forplanning, executing, and documenting the commissioning of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and process systems within water and wastewater treatment facilities. The role ensures that all systemsoperatesafely, efficiently, andin accordance withdesign intent, regulatory standards, and client requirements. The engineer will play a key part in bringing new assets online, troubleshooting issues, and supporting handover to operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning Planning & Preparation
Develop detailed commissioning plans, method statements, and risk assessments.
Review technical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, control philosophy documents, and OEM manuals.
Coordinate with design, construction, and operations teams to ensure readiness for commissioning.
Identifycommissioning requirements, resources, and specialist tools.
Execution of Commissioning Activities
Conduct pre-commissioning inspections, system checks, and verification tests.
Commission mechanical, electrical, ICA (Instrumentation, Control & Automation), and process systems including:
Pumps, blowers, mixers
Chemical dosing systems
Filtration and membrane systems
UV disinfection
PLC/SCADA systems
Flow, pressure, level, and quality instrumentation
Verify system functionality against design specifications.
Troubleshoot and rectify mechanical, electrical, and process performance issues.
Benchmark performance and optimise system operation prior to handover.
Documentation & Compliance
Prepare commissioning progress reports, test sheets, and compliance records.
Ensure all commissioning records meet water industry regulatory standards (e.g., DWI, MCERTS).
Update red-line drawings and provide input to O&M manuals.
Ensure all activitiescomply withCDM, health & safety legislation, and company procedures.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
Work closely with project teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and client representatives.
Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
Provide technical training and handover to operational staff.
Continuous Improvement
Identifyopportunities to improve commissioning processes and system design.
Feed lessons learned back into design and delivery teams
Skills, Competencies & Experience
Essential
Proven experience commissioning systems within the water or wastewater industry.
Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and ICA systems.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, control philosophies, and system documentation.
Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working on live operational water assets and construction sites.
Excellent written documentation and report writing skills.
Understanding of health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Desirable
Experience with major UK water companies
Familiarity with AMP frameworks and regulatory drivers.
Knowledge of water treatment processes (clarification, filtration, sludge treatment, chemical dosing, disinfection).
Experience using SCADA systems (e.g., Wonderware, Siemens, Rockwell).
Competence in instrumentation calibration and verification.
