The postdoctoral scholar will conduct animal research on auditory pathophysiology, gene therapy, and molecular biology within the Shi Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing complex laboratory techniques, managing mouse colonies, analyzing data, and supervising junior research fellows.
Candidates must hold a PhD and possess significant experience in mouse auditory physiology and molecular biology. Preferred qualifications include prior laboratory experience with animal surgery, tissue dissection, and various molecular biological methods.
A postdoctoral scholar position with a competitive salary and excellent benefits is available in the Shi Laboratory at the Oregon Hearing Research Center (OHRC) in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. Individuals who hold a PhD with significant mouse auditory physiology and molecular biology experience are especially qualified to apply. The main focus of the Shi lab is animal research on auditory pathophysiology, gene therapy, cellular and molecular biology. The OHRC is one of the world's leading hearing-science research groups. Expertise in the OHRC spans from basic to translational science, and from the inner ear to the auditory cortex. The research focus of OHRC investigators ranges from fundamental mechanisms of hearing to development of therapies for hearing loss.
Harvesting cochlear tissues, and immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging, PCR and RT-PCR analysis requiring mastery of complex principles and practices.
Measurement of blood flow with intravital fluorescence microscopy based on lab established protocol and the measurement of auditory function with auditory brainstem response.
Animal husbandry to maintain mouse colonies, and genotyping of transgenic mice.
Administration of agents to animals through fine animal surgery (e.g. semicircular canal surgery)
Analysis and reporting of data.
Write scientific papers and present data at scientific conferences.
Additional responsibilities include the maintenance of lab operations such as placing animal orders and detailed record keeping.
Will help to train and supervise junior research fellows on a variety of protocols established in the Shi lab (e.g., how to isolate the whole mount of cochlear tissues, cell culture and immunohistochemistry, and real-time PCR etc). Will help to coordinate research activities both independent and collaborative projects for all lab staff.
