Position Description
The Tie Bander is responsible for sorting and grading ties according to Omaha Track Standards and bundling and loading for shipment.
Major Areas of Responsibility
• Must be able to learn grade ties as per Omaha Track tie grading standards.
• Must be able to operate a skidsteer for racking, stockpiling, sorting and loading bundles.
• Must be able to tolerate doing repetitive motion for crimping and tightening banding.
• Must be able to load flat bed truck trailers and customer trailers.
• Must be able to fill out daily reports for scrap and bundles.
• Must be able to fill out Bill of Ladings.
• Inspect and maintain equipment in accordance with policies and procedures
• Practice proper housekeeping with clean, properly maintained tools and equipment
• Maintain compliance with all safety requirements, policies, and procedures
• Complete and maintain all required safety training and certifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment preferred
• Valid driver’s license required; must not have any major driving offenses within the last three years
• Dependable and consistent attendance/punctuality
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
• Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail
• Demonstrated initiative to proactively seek out work and complete tasks
• Must work well with others on a team, while still being able to complete tasks independently
Work Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in a tie grinding facility yard environment subject to all weather elements and conditions
• Ability to drive a vehicle and operate equipment/machinery
• Ability to safely operate equipment
• Ability to use and read required measuring devices, such as a tape measure
• Ability to learn the railroad industry, building knowledge of different types of ties and identifying flaws/defects
• Ability to mount and dismount equipment freely, without assistance
• Ability to meet all functional requirements including, but not limited to: lifting (up to 60lbs), sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, bending, squatting, finger dexterity, and reaching above/below shoulders.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with a diverse group. Ability to change easily from one task to another (varying in nature) and deal with competing demands
