Responsibilities

Represent the Director of Public Prosecutions to provide an independent, fair, and just prosecution service for New South Wales. Provide high-level professional representation and advice as Counsel in criminal matters across all Criminal Courts.

Requirements

Applicants must be Australian lawyers with demonstrated experience in conducting complex jury trials and appeals. Candidates must pass probity checks and meet the qualifications under the Crown Prosecutors Act 1986.

Crown Prosecutor

$325,380 per annum plus Conveyance Allowance of $17,955 per annum


The Attorney General is seeking applications from persons qualified for appointment as Crown Prosecutors under the Crown Prosecutors Act 1986 for a fixed term of up to seven years that may be renewed following an initial twelve-month acting period.

 

Crown Prosecutors represent the Director of Public Prosecutions in providing an independent, efficient, fair and just prosecution service for the people of New South Wales. They provide high-level, independent professional representation and advice as Counsel representing the Director in criminal matters in all Criminal Courts.

 

The positions could be based at various locations around the State, with the successful applicants required to attend regional courts as directed.

 

Applicants must be Australian lawyers. The key skills and knowledge required for the role are outlined in the online role description and must be addressed in the online application. In particular, applicants should be able to demonstrate their experience in conducting complex jury trials and/or appeals.

 

Note: Probity checks will be conducted.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is the independent prosecuting authority of New South Wales (NSW). The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) acts independently and impartially. The principal functions of the ODPP are to institute and conduct prosecutions for indictable offences in the Local, District and Supreme Courts; and to conduct appeals arising from those prosecutions, including as the responding party, in any court. The ODPP advises in, institutes and conducts proceedings in the public interest in accordance with the Prosecution Guidelines. Decisions about criminal prosecutions are made free of inappropriate influence of political, individual or other sectional interests. Solicitors appear and also instruct Crown Prosecutors in courts across NSW in a wide range of matters including: - trials and pleas of guilty in the District and Supreme Courts - committal proceedings in the Local Court - some summary hearings in the Local Court - appeals in the District Court, Court of Appeal, Court of Criminal Appeal and the High Court. The ODPP does not investigate crime – that is the role of investigative agencies such as the NSW Police Force. The ODPP also has a Witness Assistance Service (WAS) in each office. WAS Officers provide information, support and assistance to victims of crime and witnesses in the matters we prosecute.
