Job Purpose:

The Northeast Independent Living Program, Inc. (NILP) is seeking a per diem ADA Accessible Van Driver to provide safe, reliable transportation for older adults and people with disabilities. The driver will transport consumers to and from NILP offices, partner organizations, medical appointments, shopping, Independent Living (IL) activities, and other approved destinations throughout the Lawrence area and, as needed, across Northeast Massachusetts.

This is a per diem position with work scheduled based on program needs. Whenever possible, advance notice of workdays and hours will be provided. Typical agency hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license is required.

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safe, courteous, and efficient operation of NILP's ADA-accessible passenger van while providing excellent customer service to consumers. The Van Driver is also responsible for helping maintain the vehicle in a clean, safe, and operational condition and carrying out assigned duties in a manner that supports the efficiency and effectiveness of NILP's transportation services.

Essential Job Functions:

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist passengers, as appropriate to their individual abilities, from the vehicle to the entrance of their destination. Ensure passengers safely board and exit the vehicle and are properly seated and secured before transport.
  • Safely transport consumers and agency staff to medical appointments, Independent Living activities, community programs, shopping, partner organizations, and other approved destinations.
  • Operate ADA-accessible passenger vehicles in accordance with all applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, and agency policies.
  • Safely operate wheelchair lift equipment and secure wheelchairs and mobility devices in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Conduct routine pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and promptly report any maintenance or safety concerns. Coordinate routine servicing and maintenance as directed.
  • Maintain accurate daily transportation records, including passenger logs, trip destinations, mileage, and other required documentation.
  • Respond appropriately to passenger emergencies, accidents, or incidents, and complete all required reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general appearance of assigned vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Job Specifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of licensed driving experience.
  • Valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass required background checks, including a CORI.
  • Current CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification after hire (training provided by NILP).
  • Ability to complete all Department of Transportation training requirements associated with the Community Transit Grant Program after hire.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency response procedures to assist passengers safely.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle operation and routine maintenance sufficient to identify when servicing or repairs are needed.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain accurate transportation logs and required documentation.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on transportation needs. Most trips occur during regular weekday business hours; however, occasional evening or weekend transportation may be requested.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who self-identify as individuals with disabilities, consistent with NILP's mission and federal Center for Independent Living (CIL) requirements.
