Full job description

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, experienced, independent, and motivated senior-level staff member for our nationally recognized transportation practice in the firm’s Oakland office. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to build upon our strong presence in Alameda County while also fostering connections with projects across the Bay Area.

We are seeking an individual with at least six years of relevant experience and a strong interest in transportation for older adults and people with disabilities, paratransit, inclusive and accessible public engagement, transportation funding, grant administration, and mobility management. The ideal candidate should have some background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility. People with a diverse set of transportation planning, program management, and/or customer service experience are encouraged to apply.

Nelson\Nygaard offers a dynamic and self-directed work environment that is fast-paced and supportive. This is an opportunity to work with one of the most innovative groups of planners and engineers in the United States, including highly talented junior and support staff and industry-leading principals. Our office culture is built upon diversity, creativity, and passion for the work we do. The ideal candidate will also be working closely with an important transportation public agency in Alameda County, and directly supporting their staff with a focus on innovation, customer service, and improving transportation for all.

About Us

For nearly 40 years, Nelson\Nygaard has led the transportation planning field with our values and innovation. We’ve always been guided by the principle of putting people first—designing transportation systems for people, not just cars. This principle also extends to how we operate as a firm.

We were founded by two women who believed in the benefits of a more egalitarian workplace, where leadership and creativity can blossom at all levels and where diversity is a core strength. Today, we are 170 talented and dedicated people in 15 offices across the United States and Canada who continue to live by those values. What unites us at Nelson\Nygaard is the belief that transportation can change the world and our steadfast commitment to make the world more just, more sustainable, more connected, and more beautiful.

About You

  • You’re resourceful, curious, communicative, and enthusiastic.
  • You’re passionate about how transportation can make the world a better, more equitable place.
  • You are driven to help the most vulnerable members of the community navigate access.
  • You communicate clearly and patiently, whether you're on the phone with a rider or presenting to a committee.
  • You bring energy and a commitment to your teams and clients to do great work together.

Responsibilities

The Accessible Transportation Coordinator (ATC) position will be co-located at a client’s office in Alameda County. The on-site schedule is to be determined. The core responsibilities are outlined below.

The ATC will support planning efforts for cities, transit agencies, and Alameda County. The ATC will also serve as a primary point of contact for developing and delivering transportation programs and service solutions for older adults and people with disabilities, with a focus on paratransit and related systems. The ideal candidate will possess a broad range of programs, equity, and administrative experience and have successfully managed transportation projects and budgets. The ATC will work both independently and as part of a team.

The ideal candidate for this role will be asked to share previous work examples and demonstrate significant expertise in a range of transportation topics, equity frameworks and analysis, community outreach, and stakeholder coordination.

Essential responsibilities will include the following:

  • Project management support including implementation schedule development and maintenance, meeting coordination, agenda preparation, action item tracking, and budget support
  • Advisory committee administration including master calendar management, meeting coordination and facilitation, agenda development, committee support, and regional workshop participation
  • Public outreach and partner agency coordination including outreach planning, subconsultant and community partner coordination, public information distribution, website content review, and response to public inquiries
  • Mobility management support including countywide mobility management planning, program enhancements, and participation in regional mobility management activities
  • Paratransit funding administration including support for policy and performance measure updates, data collection and analysis, and funding coordination
  • Access for All (AFA) program coordination including monthly meeting participation, funding call support, quarterly reporting activities, and client updates

Qualifications and Requirements

Above all, we are looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for providing excellent customer service and helping people navigate their options
  • Has a passion for sustainable and accessible transportation planning
  • Is an inquisitive self-starter and a natural problem solver
  • Understands the connection between transportation and equity and is committed to incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion into their work
  • Is interested in working with our diverse clients and communities in the Bay Area to create more equitable, livable, and sustainable mobility systems through community-based efforts
  • Has a passion for advancing equity through community-based efforts, including engagement with the disability community and BIPOC communities, and will demonstrate an ability to work effectively with diverse communities

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • At least six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in transportation, programs, planning, communications or administration
  • A bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, communications and marketing, economics, public policy, social sciences, or a related field. A master’s degree in one of these fields is preferred. Demonstrated experience or expertise in lieu of precise educational attainment may also meet this requirement.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitation of public workshops
  • Knowledge of paratransit and/or accessible service needs of older adults and people with disabilities
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

The ideal candidate will be excited to take on the following opportunities:

  • Work successfully with clients, members of the public, and project teams
  • Creatively solve transportation problems
  • Outline and prepare successful proposals and reports
  • Analyze a wide range of transportation data and manage the completion of technical analyses, feasibility studies, and other transportation reports
  • Prepare and give effective presentations
  • Participate in firmwide activities to ensure that we continue to build on our mission and core values
