Job Title: Lead Lineperson

Department/Location: Operations/Williston Office

Reports to: Line Foreman

Position Type: Full-Time/Hourly

Indirect Supervision: This position may work with all employees at all levels across the organization and may interact with members. Professionalism is required at all times.

Job Summary:

Provide effective leadership and direction to line crew personnel, overseeing day-to-day projects while ensuring compliance with safety standards, specifications, and work procedures in the construction and maintenance of energized and de-energized electric utility systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains a friendly cooperative relationship within the department and with all other elements of the of the organization to achieve maximum effective coordination; maintains frequent, friendly contacts with members, the public, community, and industry to provide maximum service and promote and understanding and acceptance of the Cooperative’s ideals, objectives, and programs.
• Takes a proactive role in developing and improving processes, practices, and solutions to ensure maximum member satisfaction.
• Constructs, maintains, and operates the Cooperative’s distribution facilities in a safe and efficient manner and assures its members of an adequate and reliable supply of electric energy.
• Ensures that all construction, operation, and maintenance work is performed in a safe and efficient manner.
• Performs field work required for staking and marking distribution lines and audits and/or inspects distribution facilities.
• Performs service cost estimates, load and voltage drop calculations, and transformer recommendations.
• Assists the Line Foreperson and other personnel in establishing and implementing acceptable department goals and objectives.
• Ensures proper care and use of equipment.
• Provides training to Apprentice Lineworkers and crew members.
• Supervises the work of assigned crew members.
• Responds to power outages and customer problems and troubleshoots to restore power in a timely manner.
• Must live within a 20-minute range of the office/shop location assigned by MWEC as determined by Google Maps.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Knowledge:
  • Effective knowledge of company policies and procedures and the ability to remain current on such policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and operating procedures associated with lineworker duties.
  • Construction, operation, and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems and associated equipment.
  • REA construction specifications and applicable National Electric Safety Code (NESC) standards.
  • Electric distribution system materials, installation, repair, and maintenance practices.
  • First AID and CPR procedures.
• Skills:
  • Skills in dealing with a variety of people under difficult circumstances and the ability to quickly adjust to varying personality traits.
  • Ability to perform service cost estimates, load calculations, voltage drop calculations, and transformer recommendations.
  • Effective troubleshooting skills related to power outages and customer service issues.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and develop Apprentice Lineworkers and crew members.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain tools, equipment, and Cooperative facilities.
  • Ability to work confidently climbing poles and perform all job functions of a lineworker.
  • Skilled in performing energized and de-energized line work safely and effectively.
• Abilities:
  • Demonstrates the highest integrity; dependable, patient, courteous, and friendly.
  • Willingness to learn and qualify for further advancement.
  • Ability to keep current on methods and procedures of the position and participate in the training opportunities.
  • Ability to safely function in all aspects of the position.
  • Ability to safely work with energized conductors of all voltages.
  • Ability to apply safety standards, technical knowledge, and proper work practices in field operations.

Qualifications:

• Experience:
  • Experience as a Journeyman Lineworker required
  • Two (2) years of experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance of electric distribution facilities.
• Education and Certifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Journey Lineworker through the US Department of Labor.
  • Must maintain current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Driving is required. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no restrictions, meet company driving standards, and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

• This position requires the ability to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and performing overhead reaching and lifting. This position involves frequent standing, climbing, crawling, bending, pulling, reaching, and working at heights exceeding 100 feet. The employee must be able to safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery, communicate clearly, and possess the ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic, analyze information, and complete required documentation.
• This position requires outside work under various weather conditions, including rain, high winds, blowing snow, ice, freezing rain, and sudden weather changes, with frequent exposure to temperatures ranging from -20°F (or lower with wind chill) to over 100°F. Employee are subject to irregular hours, overtime, emergency callouts, storm restoration assignments, and must be available to work outside normal office hours.
