The Utility Maintainer 1 performs responsible utility maintenance and laboring work, including the operation of sewer cleaning trucks and equipment. They are responsible for repairing and installing pipelines, maintaining hydrants and gates, and ensuring the safe operation of utility maintenance tools.
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of relevant experience in water or sewer line maintenance. A valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with airbrake and tanker endorsements is required.
The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) provides quality water supply, water pollution control, mapping, and household hazardous waste collection to eight member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. Additionally, the MDC provides drinking water to portions of Farmington, Glastonbury, East Granby and South Windsor, known as the MDC's non-member towns.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The purpose of this classification is to provide responsible utility maintenance and laboring work which may involve providing assistance operating sewer cleaning trucks and operating sewer cleaning equipment, repairing and installing pipelines using power equipment and tools, servicing and repairing hydrants and related assemblies or servicing and maintaining and repairing gates and related assemblies.
Work involves responsibility for safe operation of utility maintenance equipment. Duties may include assisting in operation of rod, jet and camel trucks and cleaning and maintaining sewer lines and related facilities, the operation of gate trucks and various pneumatic excavation tools and pipe cutting equipment. This position also has the responsibility for making routine equipment operating decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have some knowledge, skill and ability in sewer line maintenance, gate maintenance, hydrant maintenance or water and sewer pipe maintenance and repair.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma or the equivalent plus one (1) year of water service or sewer line maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis. Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License, Subclassification "B" with airbrake and tanker endorsements.
PERTINENT DETAILS:
A screening of all applicants will be made by the Human Resources Department. Only candidates who meet the minimum screening requirements as set forth in Article 7 will be considered for point scoring. Per Article 7.3b2 of the Bargaining Unit Agreement an eligibility listing will be established. Only those qualified will be placed on the listing.
As part of the screening process, applicants will be required to take a written examination. A passing score of 70 on the written test is required in order to be considered for an interview with supervision and further point evaluation.
