Position: Maintenance Worker I/II

Department: Public Works - Utility Services

Salary: MWI - $27.01 - $34.47 per hour (Union - 6000 Series) 

MWII - $29.87 - $38.11 per hour (Union - 6000 Series)

 Non-Exempt - Overtime Eligible

Benefits eligible & 401(a) payment equal to 5% of base salary


General Summary: 

Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level position. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks. 

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level position. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by the assignment of the full range of duties and lead responsibility related to specific projects, as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. 

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain and repair public right–of–way including trash pick-up and removal, and weed abatement.
  • Operate and maintain light equipment in public right–of–way and City property.
  • Hand sweep or shovel debris and rubbish from right-of-way.
  • Maneuver sweeping vehicles in light to heavy traffic, using skillful driving techniques.
  • Make minor adjustments and repairs along the sweeping route as necessary to properly utilize sweeping equipment.
  • Maintain logs and records of work performed; maintain supply lists; order supplies as assigned.
  • Assist in training new employees; monitor and assign tasks to court referrals workers and contract labor as appropriate.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Operate power equipment such as weed whips, gas blowers, and tractors for street maintenance.
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used.
  • Clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Apply safe work practices in the public right of way.
  • Maintain a predetermined sweeping schedule, keep records of areas swept, mileage covered, water consumption, loads emptied and other conditions determined by supervisor.
  • Forward reports to supervisor on street sweeping conditions, i.e., tree limbs too low to maneuver sweeper underneath, gutters not adequate for sweeping, areas needing hand sweep, abandoned vehicles or materials in streets.
  • Deposit refuse piles at specified locations and properly barricade as necessary.
  • Maintain the sweeper in a high state of readiness by washing, waxing, greasing, minor adjustments, changing parts, and reporting other mechanical failures for repair.
  • Perform daily equipment check.
  • Respond to emergency and special sweeps as required.
  • Operate a motor sweeper and sweep streets and gutter; select effective and efficient method to cover assigned route, adjust gutters and pick up brooms to effectively sweep streets and gutters, dump contents of sweeper hopper when full.
  • Perform general servicing, including cleaning of motor sweeper, checking for broom and chain wear, replacing brooms, reporting mechanical or other equipment problems.
  • Assist in trash and debris control activities such as picking up of litter and other street maintenance activities as required or when weather does not permit sweeping operations.
  • Operate other street maintenance equipment such as trucks, flushers, and loaders as required.
  • Monitor and clean sweeper pad at City Maintenance Yard.
  • Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights-of-way.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive. An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor. This position is considered exempt.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge of:

  • Basic techniques and practices used in construction, repair, and maintenance of public facilities and infrastructure.
  • General use, purpose and maintenance of tools, equipment, and methods used in construction work.
  • Principles and practices of work safety

Minimum Qualifications:

Maintenance Worker I

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in field construction and maintenance work
  • Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license

Maintenance Worker II

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in field construction and maintenance work similar to the Maintenance Worker I classification
  • Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license
