Requires a bachelor's degree and 6-8+ years of experience in public service, higher education, or career services. A master's degree in public policy or a related field and experience with Capitol Hill recruiting are preferred.
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Career & Experiential Learning for Public Leadership leads the development of pathway support for students pursuing careers in public service, government, policy, advocacy, and mission-driven leadership. This role integrates advising, employer and alumni engagement, and experiential learning to help students build access to public interest and policy pathways.
This position supports students across a wide range of public-facing careers, including Capitol Hill, executive branch-adjacent roles, state and local government, nonprofit leadership, and public policy organizations. The Associate Director builds practical pathways into these fields through alumni activation, networking, internships, and career preparation.
Career Advancement & Engagement at Vanderbilt University is building a pathway-based career ecosystem that aligns academic experience, experiential learning, and employer engagement to improve student outcomes at scale. Through advising, internships, industry partnerships, and AI-enabled tools, CAE helps students explore, prepare for, and launch into meaningful careers across a broad range of industries.

Our Interdisciplinary Materials Science (IMS) program offers a unique multidisciplinary experience where students design their own curriculum, and collaborate with faculty and students from engineering, chemistry, physics, and medicine, who are working on some the biggest of society's challenges. The IMS Ph.D. program is integrated with VINSE (Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering), which boasts brand new state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization facilities. Resources include a cleanroom, analytical/nanocrystal support core, and an advanced imaging suite. Our students rotate through three different labs in the first year to learn the culture of each research group and the advising style of the mentors prior to project/adviser selection. We offer a highly customized curriculum where students can select courses from a variety of technical departments to support their research project. This is work is supported by research facilities equipped with the latest instrumentation with outstanding research programs and faculty, where IMS researchers use nanotechnology to address the world’s most important challenges in energy, health, and security.
