Position Summary

The EHS Specialist I is an early-career safety professional who supports the implementation and administration of Forgen’s EHS Program across assigned projects. With a minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience, this role provides day-to-day field support, conducts routine inspections and audits, assists in developing project Health and Safety Plans (HASPs), facilitates basic trainings, and supports incident investigations.

Working closely with project teams, the EHS Specialist I helps drive Forgen’s Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture by promoting safe behaviors, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and reinforcing Forgen’s Core Values. This role serves as a critical field presence, helping ensure safe execution of geotechnical and specialty civil work while gaining deeper technical and leadership experience.

Forgen Overview

Forgen is a leading geotechnical and specialty civil construction company operating across North America. We are dedicated to delivering innovative solutions for complex civil, geotechnical, and environmental challenges, guided by our core values of integrity, passion, teamwork, and smart work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Embrace and model Forgen’s Core Values and contribute to an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.
  • Support the implementation of Forgen’s EHS Program on assigned projects.
  • Conduct regular site safety inspections, audits, and basic exposure monitoring.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and implementing project HASPs and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).
  • Support new hire orientations, project-specific safety training, and toolbox talks.
  • Promote safety awareness daily through field presence, coaching, and positive engagement with crews.
  • Assist in incident and near-miss investigations, including documentation and corrective action follow-up.
  • Ensure safety observations, inspections, training records, and incident data are accurately entered into EHS Insights.
  • Participate in compliance audits, client visits, and project coordination meetings.
  • Perform inspections of fire extinguishers, ladders, harnesses, and other safety-related equipment.
  • Conduct weekly walkthroughs and communicate safety concerns to project leadership.
  • Track expirations for certifications, medical screenings, and training, and coordinate renewals.
  • Support identification, ordering, and distribution of PPE and maintain adequate stock.
  • Assist with air sampling, equipment calibration, basic industrial hygiene tasks, and permit reviews.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Construction, or related field.
  • 3+ years of relevant safety experience in civil, environmental, industrial, or heavy construction environments.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 30-Hour OSHA Construction
  • First Aid/CPR
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER (or ability to obtain)
  • Competent Person trainings
  • EM385-1-1 familiarity
  • BCSP progress (e.g., STS, CHST, or equivalent)

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, extended standing or walking on project sites, climbing in and out of equipment, and working in confined spaces or at heights. Work conditions and demands may vary, with possible exposure to heavy machinery, chemicals, dust, fumes, noise, and extreme weather. Proper PPE, including protective eyewear, gloves, a hard hat, and steel-toed boots, is required. Effective communication, tool use, and adherence to safety protocols are essential.

This job description outlines the general scope of work and is not exhaustive. Employees may be assigned additional duties as needed. Requirements may be adjusted to accommodate disabilities, except where they pose a direct safety risk.
