Responsibilities
Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical equipment and systems onboard vessels and in ship repair facilities. This includes overhauling pumps, valves, and propulsion equipment while ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
Requirements
Requires a trade qualification as a Mechanical Fitter, Marine Engineer, or equivalent. Experience in ship repair or industrial maintenance and the ability to read engineering drawings is highly desirable.
The primary purpose of the Mechanical Fitter is to carry out maintenance, repair, overhaul and installation of mechanical equipment and systems onboard vessels and within the Company's ship repair facilities.
The Mechanical Fitter will be involved in a wide variety of ship repair activities including machinery overhauls, pump and valve repairs, hydraulic systems, propulsion equipment, deck machinery and general mechanical fitting duties. The role requires a practical and safety-conscious individual capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
The position is based both onboard vessels and within workshop environments and may require occasional overtime to support operational requirements.
Responsibilities / Principal Duties
Carry out mechanical fitting, maintenance, repair and overhaul work on vessels, marine equipment and Company assets.
Remove, dismantle, inspect, repair, reassemble and install mechanical equipment and machinery.
Assist with the overhaul and maintenance of pumps, valves, gearboxes, hydraulic equipment, winches, cranes and auxiliary machinery.
Carry out fault finding and troubleshooting on mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Perform alignment, measurement and fitting activities using appropriate engineering tools and equipment.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals and work instructions.
Assist with vessel drydock projects and onboard repair activities.
Work safely in machinery spaces, tanks, confined spaces and other shipboard environments in accordance with Company procedures.
Operate hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment safely and efficiently.
Assist with lifting operations and machinery removals using lifting equipment where trained and authorised.
Complete maintenance records, job sheets and inspection reports as required.
Support fabrication, welding and other engineering activities where required.
Assist with vessel mooring and unmooring operations when required.
Maintain a clean, safe and organised work area.
Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Company Health & Safety procedures, Risk Assessments and Permit-to-Work systems.
Work closely with project managers, supervisors and other trades to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
Any other duties that management may from time to time deem necessary and reasonably require.
Reporting To
Reports directly to the Mechanical Chargehand, Project Manager or Ship Repair Manager.
Essential Requirements
Either of the following: Qualified Mechanical Fitter, Fitter/Turner, Mechanical Technician, Plant Fitter, HGV Mechanic, Agricultural Mechanic, Marine Engineer or equivalent trade qualification.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Good mechanical aptitude and fault-finding ability.
Strong commitment to safety and quality.
Good communication skills.
Desirable Requirements
Experience in ship repair, marine engineering or industrial maintenance.
Experience working on pumps, valves, hydraulics, gearboxes or rotating equipment.
Experience reading engineering drawings and technical documentation.
Forklift, MEWP, Safe Pass or Manual Handling certification.
Experience working within port, marine, manufacturing or heavy industrial environments.
