Responsibilities

The Park Steward is responsible for patrolling public spaces, maintaining cleanliness through trash removal and landscaping, and serving as a visible ambassador to the public. The role also involves enforcing park rules, supporting event staging, and reporting maintenance or safety issues to supervisors.

A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with certifications in CPR/First Aid or OSHA safety. Candidates must be physically able to perform outdoor maintenance tasks, lift up to 50 lbs, and interact respectfully with the public in all weather conditions.

The Downtown Partnership of Baltimore (DPOB) strives to make Downtown a destination of choice for living, working, visiting, and investing. We are the connection to everything happening in the state’s largest business center, cultural district, and fastest-growing neighborhoods. We are the center of it all. We also oversee the Downtown Management Authority (DMA), Baltimore’s oldest and largest business improvement district (BID). DPOB's programs – including uniformed operations teams of Downtown Baltimore Guides, Clean Sweep Ambassadors, and Park Stewards – make the 106-block downtown district more attractive, vibrant, and hospitable.

We are looking for a Park Steward to help maintain and activate our public spaces to the highest standards. Under the direction of the Director of Public Space Operations, the Park Steward is responsible for patrolling assigned areas, supporting day-to-day upkeep, and serving as a visible ambassador to the public. This role helps create a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all park users and includes support for events, seasonal activities, and special projects across our parks and public spaces.

We’ll need you to

  • Conduct: daily evaluations of assigned area at beginning and end of each shift with detailed report and/or work orders of tasks completed. Follow guidelines and schedules posted on-site for each park space.
  • Patrol: walk through assigned area throughout shift and maintain a visible presence near seating areas during lunch/dinner hours, and other peak times. Interact with park patrons in a friendly, respectful manner. Provide information and address undesirable behaviors per rules and regulations (call for back up or 911, if needed). 
  • Trash: empty trash cans and put trash in appropriate pick-up area, change trash bags in cans, sweep walkways/under benches/ hard surfaces, and pick up loose trash throughout the area. These duties should be addressed several times throughout each shift.
  • Furniture: set up and break down furniture, weather permitting. Wipe down tables and chairs periodically throughout each shift. Lock up furniture, as needed. Report any broken furniture to Supervisor.
  • Rules & Regulations: Enforce posted park rules and regulations. Identify challenges and make suggestions for improvements.
  • Landscaping: mow, weed, prune, dead-head, and clear leaves and other materials as needed, or as instructed.
  • Seasonal Duties: 
    • Pull plants, mulch, plant, and water as directed.
    • Assess daily if lawn, plants, trees need to be watered, and water accordingly.
    • Report any issues with irrigation systems or stressed plants, grass, or trees.
  • Snow and ice removal, as needed.
  • Communicate with Supervisor regarding the need for repairs, new tools, uniform requests, and additional training. 
  • Assist in the planning, staging, and supervision of events in the various public spaces.
  • Assist with decorative lighting installations, storage area organization, special projects, power washing, painting, and supply inventories.
  • Handle various initiatives and tasks in park spaces, including lawn games, working events, assisting vendors, etc.
  • Respond to emergency situations by notifying appropriate authorities.
  • Routinely monitor public spaces for rodent infestation, broken lights, blocked drains, fountain or irrigation issues, electrical outages, illegal dumping, graffiti, etc., and report to supervisor.
  • Evaluate the use of park spaces and make recommendations for improvements to the spaces that will maximize the public’s access and enjoyment.

Is This You?

  • High School Diploma, GED preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Relevant certification preferred, but not required, such as CPR/First Aid/AED certification, OHSA safety training, landscaping certificates, etc. 

Other Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform the following with training provided:

  • Follow verbal and written instructions and complete assigned tasks reliably 
  • Interact respectfully with the public and communicate basic information clearly 
  • Observe, identify, and report safety, maintenance, or cleanliness issues 
  • Perform routine outdoor maintenance tasks (trash removal, sweeping, basic landscaping support, furniture setup/breakdown) 
  • Support public space operations, including events and seasonal activities 
  • Recognize when to escalate issues to supervisors or emergency services 
  • Work safely in outdoor environments and follow basic workplace safety practices 
  • Use basic tools and equipment as trained 
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a public-facing environment

Training provided upon hire in areas such as:

  • Landscaping and seasonal maintenance practices 
  • Customer service and conflict de-escalation 
  • Public space operations and event support 
  • Safety procedures and emergency response protocols

Position Type/Expected Work Hours

  • This is a full-time non-exempt position. 
  • This is an outdoor, public-facing role performed in all weather conditions and across varied park environments, including uneven terrain and high-traffic public spaces.
  • The position requires frequent walking, standing, and physical activity throughout the workday, including lifting, carrying, and performing routine maintenance tasks (up to 25–50 lbs.).
  • Work involves regular interaction with the public and may include exposure to noise, weather, wildlife, and other typical outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs and scheduled events.
  • The role requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, follow instructions, and respond appropriately to safety, maintenance, or operational concerns, including urgent situations when needed.

This full-time position starts at $15 per hour, then increases to $18 per hour on the first of the month following 60 days of employment.
