Full job description

This is a full-time, fixed-term position providing maternity leave cover for 18 months, commencing [insert start date].

Working within a values-based boarding and school community, the Psychologist plays a vital role in supporting the emotional wellbeing, mental health, learning engagement, and personal development of our students. The successful candidate will work closely with students, families, boarding staff, teachers, and external agencies to provide responsive and proactive psychological support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual psychological assessment, counselling, and support for students
  • Support students experiencing social, emotional, behavioural, or mental health challenges
  • Work collaboratively with pastoral, boarding, and academic staff to develop appropriate support strategies
  • Provide management and direction to the School Counsellor
  • Partner with parents and caregivers in supporting student wellbeing
  • Facilitate referrals and liaise with external health professionals and agencies where required
  • Contribute to wellbeing initiatives, education programmes, and staff support
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with professional standards

About You

The successful applicant will:

  • Hold current registration with the New Zealand Psychologist's Board
  • Have experience working with children and adolescents
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Be able to build strong, trusting relationships with boys and young men
  • Thrive in a collaborative school and boarding environment
  • Show sound professional judgement, discretion, and confidentiality
  • Bring warmth, resilience, initiative, and a student-centred approach

Experience within an educational or boarding environment would be advantageous.

All revenue generated funds the operating costs of the school and any capital development. Additionally, about 5% of the annual operating expense of the school is covered by the government grant provided to all independent schools.
