Overview

The Arena Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the operation of the refrigeration plant, equipment, janitorial, building maintenance and repairs at more than one site, with multiple arena facilities.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Schedules and assigns work to the ASW 2, ASW 1 and BSWs to ensure fair allocation of workloads are maintained.
  • Partakes in recruitment, orientation, coordination of staff scheduling, task management, performance management and coaching.
  • Oversees completion of arena tasks such as routine and minor/preventative maintenance repair, janitorial and operational upkeep.
  • Inspects routine and minor maintenance repair, janitorial and operational upkeep performed by ASW 2 and ASW 1 and BSW staff.
  • Monitors vendors and/or internal departments to perform major inspections, repairs and changes to existing systems. Inspecting work completed by the vendors and approving payment for goods and services received.
  • Oversees and monitors refrigeration plant operations, including liaising with refrigeration service contractor to ensure optimal performance and address emergency situations.
  • Liaises with arena facility coordinators, facility management, various city hall and works yard departments and public.
  • Liaises specifically with Technical Safety BC as the building’s chief engineer to ensure all safety regulations and procedures are followed by each individual staff member. 
  • Prepares budget estimates to a supervisor, and implements budgets upon approval, monitors expenditures and advises a superior of potential cost over-runs and prepares and authorizes purchase requisitions within defined limits.
  • Implements preventative maintenance programs.
  • Responds to client service requests for resolution to system problems and emergency response to urgent concerns.
  • Performs building maintenance as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work; including arena emergency procedures.
  • Ability to plan, assign, check, train, supervise, evaluate and oversee the work of a group of subordinates engaged in building, equipment maintenance, janitorial services and arena operation.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in ice-making, refrigeration operations, janitorial and building maintenance work.
  • Ability to coordinate and schedule the provision of the building, equipment maintenance and janitorial services and arena operations for several arena facilities at multiple sites and to establish and maintain preventative maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of the functions and operations of building heating and ventilating equipment and automated systems including the operations of plumbing and electrical equipment and their systems.
  • Skill in recognizing mechanical causes of equipment breakdown, identifying potential problems and recording issues to advise City operations. Ability to plan and implement automated preventative maintenance schedules. 
  • Proven ability managing complex staff scheduling.
  • Ability to prepare budget estimates for building, janitorial, equipment requirements, and arena operations for multiple facilities, implement budget upon approval; monitor expenditures and to advise superior of potential cost over-runs. 
  • Ability to prepare and authorize purchase requisitions for building, janitorial, and arena equipment supplies and parts within defined limits and to maintain an inventory of same.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain maintenance records and correspondence related to the work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain outstanding customer service experience and effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external staff, public and contractors.
  • Demonstrate ability leading power or cost saving initiatives.
  • Strong multitasking skills and ability to meet varying deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making and problem solving under pressure.
  • Demonstrate project management and carpentry skills.
  • Demonstrate ability in; removing and installing ice surfaces, operating and maintaining an ice resurfacer and edger and repairing rink boards.
  • Computer knowledge and skill is required.  Some of the computer applications used include PeopleSoft (HCM), PerfectMind, Infor Public Sector (IPS), Delta, Outlook and Microsoft programs and REDMS or a similar records management system to perform the duties of the job.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow SDS (Safety Data Sheets).
  • Ability to perform regular light physical effort to operate ice resurfacer and assist and/or coordinate ice maintenance.
  • Ability to successfully pass a police information check.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of a 2 year Diploma in refrigeration.
  • Minimum 2 years job related experience in arena services in a supervisory capacity.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Refrigeration Operator (R.O.) Certification of Qualification from the Technical Safety BC OR Class 4 Power Engineering.
  • Current First Aid Certificate including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an Arena/Ice Rink facility. Regular light to medium physical effort with occasional heavy lifting in a cold environment and operation of a mechanical equipment such as an ice resurfacer is required.  There may be occasional exposure to foul odours, ammonia and disruptive customers.
