Job Summary

The Assistant Nurse Manager provides operational oversight and leadership for patient care support staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries. Working in collaboration with the Nurse Director and nursing leadership team, this role supports daily unit operations, staffing coordination, and the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.

 

The Assistant Nurse Manager is accountable for the performance and operational efficiency of assigned unit(s), ensuring support staff workflows align with patient care needs, safety standards, and hospital priorities. They promote adherence to patient safety practices, support staff development and engagement, and ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

 

This role serves as a key liaison between nursing leadership and support staff and fosters a collaborative work environment while supporting initiatives that improve patient care, workflow efficiency, staff accountability, and overall unit performance.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Oversees delivery of care given to patients in the department by directing and delegating, ensuring that timely, quality, customer-focused care is delivered to all patients in the department.
• Evaluates and directs patient flow activities on the unit. In collaboration with the nursing supervisor, expedites patient flow on the nursing unit and assuring timely patient flow throughout the facility.
• Maintains working knowledge of the EMR and utilizes it to assure timely admission and discharges occur on the nursing unit.
• Problem solves, removes barriers and collaborates with the nurse director/ supervisor concerning patient care needs, timely admission and discharge from the nursing unit.
• Assesses that patient care assignments to nursing staff are based on clinical competencies matching needs of the patient and recommends adjustments as needed. Matches appropriate budgeted staffing patterns to volume and acuity.
• Evaluates individual nursing performance relating to clinical competencies and the overall quality of care on his or her shift. Assists the nurse director concerning staff performance for the preparation of individual staff performance appraisals. Participates in hiring and related staffing decisions. Has the authority to discipline where appropriate.
• Investigates and assesses all customer complaints, problems and incidents, which occur on shift. Takes appropriate corrective action to resolve complaints. Reports all incidents and actions taken to the on-shift supervisor and nurse director.
• Assists the nurse director with identification of staff educational needs and works with the off-shift educators to assure any educational needs are met on a timely basis. Serves as a clinical resource and role model for staff.
• Informs the nurse director of any patient issues, unusual activities, staff concerns or unit problems. Assures all required reports are prepared and submitted to the appropriate administration.
• Responds to cases of cardiopulmonary arrest, fire, disaster or other emergencies in a professional and timely manner. Evaluates any code blue response issues and reports them to manager.
• Works with the administration on duty to assure that the hospital can respond to community disasters.
• Promotes a culture of recognition by acknowledging staff contributions and celebrating achievements to support a positive work environment.
• Supports staff retention through engagement, mentorship, and fostering a supportive team culture that encourages professional growth and job satisfaction.
• Maintains clear and consistent communication with team members to ensure alignment with unit goals, expectations, and operational updates.
• Actively participates in unit meetings by showing interest and contributing appropriately.
• Makes recommendations to the nurse director concerning capital request items needed for the unit.
• Assumes responsibility for own professional development, setting goals, and striving to achieve them through available resources, such as attending seminars, in-services and/or reading journals.
• Supports the goals of the unit and patient care services through active daily role modeling. Makes recommendations to the nurse director of any process changes that need to occur to assure that goals are met.
• Administers direct patient care and maintains clinical skills for particular patient population.
• Performs assessments and develop an individualized plan of care for geriatric patients.
• Participates in Hospital and professional meetings, committees and conferences as needed.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree Required
• Field of study: Nursing
• Must be graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Minimum 3 to 5 Years of job-related experience
• Rhode Island Registered Nurse licensure required
• Certification in administration or related specialty is preferred.
• Strong, specialized knowledge of the unit’s patient population and relevant clinical practices, standards, and procedures.
• Thorough understanding of regulatory and accreditation requirements, including RI Department of Health policies and accreditation standards.
• Demonstrated competency in disaster planning, emergency procedures, and organizational preparedness.
• Solid working knowledge of nursing practices, including the Nurse Practice Act, documentation standards, and required competencies for the clinical area.
• Proficient in risk management, infection control, and quality improvement processes to support safe and effective patient care.
• Consistently delivers strong customer service and contributes to patient satisfaction.
