Full job description

Human Resources Coordinator

Position Summary:

Bayliss Boatworks is seeking an experienced Human Resources Professional to lead the HR function for our custom boatbuilding operation. This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable advising leadership and walking the shop floor to sort out a timecard question.

The Human Resources Coordinator oversees recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, and training—and owns the daily processing of shop floor time entry into our payroll and billing systems. Success in this position means our craftsmen are paid accurately and on time, our labor hours are billed correctly to each project, and our people have an HR partner they trust.

Key Responsibilities:

Payroll & Time Entry

  • Collect, review, and process time entry from the shop floor into the company's payroll and billing systems on a daily basis.
  • Verify that labor hours are coded accurately to the correct job, hull, or work order so that project billing and job costing reflect true labor cost.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies in hours, job codes, and pay rates directly with supervisors and employees.
  • Partner with Accounting and Project Management to ensure labor data flows cleanly between payroll, job costing, and customer invoicing.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and support internal and external audits as needed.

Recruitment & Staffing

  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies that attract skilled tradespeople, marine professionals, and administrative talent.
  • Manage job postings, screening, interviewing, and selection.
  • Coordinate onboarding and orientation so new hires are productive and integrated quickly.

Employee Relations

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions and concerns.
  • Foster a positive workplace built on trust, open communication, and mutual respect.
  • Advise managers and supervisors on employee relations matters and disciplinary actions.

Compliance & Policy Management

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (EEO, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and others).
  • Develop, update, and enforce HR policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee records.

Performance Management

  • Administer the performance appraisal process and coach managers and supervisors through it.
  • Manage the progressive discipline process when necessary.

Training & Development

  • Identify training needs and implement employee development programs.
  • Facilitate management training in leadership, conflict resolution, and compliance.
  • Support succession planning for key production and leadership roles.

HR Reporting & Analytics

  • Prepare HR metrics and dashboards covering turnover, retention, time-to-fill, and labor hours.
  • Use data to identify trends and recommend process improvements.

Role-Specific Requirements

  • Office-based with regular interaction throughout the production facility.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality while building strong working relationships with employees and leadership.
  • May require occasional flexibility to support recruiting events, orientations, or other HR initiatives.

What We Offer:

We understand that the best yachts are built by the best team. To support you in your role, we offer an exceptional compensation and benefits package:

  • Competitive hourly and overtime pay
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Biannual tool allowance
  • ABYC Certification assistance
  • Time off every year between Christmas and New Year's

Who We're Looking For:

We care more about how you work with people than about the boxes you check. If you meet most of what follows and are ready to take on the rest, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Need

  • Proven HR experience with real ownership of the day-to-day—hiring, employee questions, benefits, and payroll support.
  • Comfort processing payroll and time entry, or the willingness to learn our systems quickly and get the details right.
  • Genuine people skills: approachable, level-headed, and able to earn the trust of both leadership and the folks building boats.
  • Discretion with confidential information and a careful eye for detail.
  • Working comfort with ADP and Microsoft Office, or the aptitude to pick up new systems.

Nice to Have

  • A degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in manufacturing, marine, construction, or another skilled-trades environment.
  • Familiarity with job costing and labor-to-project billing.
