The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.
The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.
In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students.
Job Summary Reporting to the Orientation Roundtable (ORT) Coordinator, the Orientation Support Staff is responsible for providing logistical and operational support to the ORT team and Faculty Executive Committees during Orientation Week and related events. This role involves assisting with the transportation, setup, maintenance, and takedown of equipment for both on-campus and off-campus events. The Orientation Support Staff works as part of an on-call support team, providing immediate, on-site assistance to ensure events proceed smoothly. This role involves learning about the safe operation of AV/IT equipment, adherence to lifting protocols, and the ability to drive U-Haul vans and pickup trucks. The position requires strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to adapt to dynamic event needs.
Job Description 25 hours per week from August 31 - September 13 Provide logistical support for Orientation events, including the setup, takedown, and transportation of equipment such as tables, chairs, AV/IT equipment, scaffolding, and generators Assist with organizing, loading, unloading, and transporting equipment from storage to event sites and back Operate U-Haul vans and pickup trucks as required for equipment delivery and transportation Set up and troubleshoot AV/IT equipment including microphones, speakers, and projectors, following ORT training and safety guidelines Maintain organized storage areas, ensuring proper handling and care of all equipment Respond promptly to operational requests as part of an on-call support team during Orientation Week Collaborate with the ORT Coordinator and Faculty Executive Committees to support the successful execution of events Follow all safety protocols related to lifting, equipment assembly, and vehicle operation Complete additional duties as assigned by the ORT Coordinator
Job Requirements Must hold a valid G2 (or equivalent) driver’s license with comfort operating U-Haul vans and pickup trucks Ability to lift, move, and set up equipment including tables, chairs, AV/IT equipment, scaffolding, and generators (training provided) Comfortable with operating AV/IT equipment following training (microphones, speakers, projectors, etc.) Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, and weekends, particularly during Orientation Week Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to evolving event needs Effective communication skills to coordinate with ORT leadership, event teams, and fellow staff Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to safety and task completion
Work Conditions In-person, physically active role requiring frequent lifting, setup, and takedown of equipment in both indoor and outdoor settings Exposure to variable weather conditions during event setup and execution Requirement to operate vehicles for equipment transportation between storage and event locations On-call availability during Orientation Week to respond to immediate operational needs Reports directly to the ORT Coordinator; collaborates closely with Orientation committees and event stakeholders Training provided for safety protocols, AV/IT equipment usage, and proper lifting techniques
