Compensation: $26.13 per hour plus $2.00 per hour shift differential for night shift
Available Shifts:
Day Shift: Monday-Friday from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm
Night Shift: Monday-Friday from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am
A Brief Summary of This Position
The Welder B is responsible for efficiently performing a variety of high-quality welding operations in a production environment. This incumbent will also make necessary adjustments to ensure proper blueprint specifications are met as well as performing minor maintenance on welding equipment. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to operate material handling equipment such as cranes, pallet jacks, forklifts, and conveyors.
Essential Functions
Operate automated welding equipment
Reads and makes necessary adjustments to insure proper blueprint specifications
Operates grinding and burning equipment
Accurately use measuring devices such as a tape measure
Performs minor welding machine maintenance (i.e. tips, liners, gas cups, drive rolls)
Uses labor reporting system, routing shop forms, fill out move tags, reads and utilizes blueprints
Applies adjustments to welding machinery to prescribed settings, operates production tooling and fixtures as well as material
Provides accurate accounting of labor, number of parts produced and provides all necessary quality checks
Participates and leads various team functions and projects adapting to everyday problems in a cooperative manner
Works with elements of lean production researching ideas for continuous improvement with both individual cells and the total unit
Collaborates with management and demonstrates effective, positive and proper communication
Operates material handling equipment such as cranes, pallet jacks, forklifts, and conveyors
Utilizes all safety devices and wear all mandatory personal protective safety equipment
Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1-3 years of welding experience.
Pass the level B welding capability test conducted on site – welding demonstration test as well as written test.
Ability read blueprints.
Ability to read, write, and understand English in order to complete necessary paperwork. Able to understand and follow verbal/written instructions.
1 year of hands-on welding experience in a professional environment or 3 years of non-professional welding experience (recreational activity, volunteer work, etc.).
Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
High awareness of safety at all times.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
At least 6 months of Valmont or similar shop welding experience
Welding and/or Quality certification
Educational Background
Welding work experience or certification from a recognized welding school or organization. With either case, the candidate must satisfactorily pass the in-house Level B Weld Tests
Reads AWS symbol charts
Must be able to read, write, and understand English in order to complete necessary paperwork requirements. Must be able to understand and follow verbal/written instructions
Must be capable of correct interpretation and utilization of engineering drawings, both in imperial and metric measure.
Do simple math (add, subtract, divide and multiply both whole numbers and fractions)
Use a handheld calculator
Use a computer to enter production data and perform time keeping functions
Capable of successfully completing required structured training classes
Job Training Skill Development
Blueprint/design reading skills will be used to determine part dimensions and tolerances which may be indicated in both imperial and metric measurements
Operates welding equipment and makes necessary adjustments to insure proper blueprint specifications
Operates grinding and burning equipment
Ability to weld out of position on all materials
Production of any weld piece needed within the unit
Precision measuring equipment (including calipers, micrometers, inclinometers, various types of dial gages, plug gages, thread gages and snap gages) will be used to check parts
Identification of material discrepancies with gauges and visual inspections.
Ability of welding prototype parts and new product designs
Inventory form and inspection record processing
Ability to assist with the set-up of any production job
Proper inspection of parts and materials
Ability to carry out minor maintenance operations

Decision Making
Employee makes routine decisions and also makes decisions that may affect the quality of the products being manufactured. Determines proper adjustments to tooling, burning and welding equipment to meet prescribed standards. Identifies any raw material needs and orders through appropriate channels. Recognizes poor quality welds and takes corrective action. These are decisions that affect the employee’s own work quality and output. More complex decisions that affect the rest of the department will be made with the guidance of the lead person or supervisor. Although most of this job is covered by standard practices, good common sense and quality control procedures are essential aspects of completing this job in a successful manner.
EFFORT
The welding employee needs to be able lift, carry, bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time. The incumbent needs to be able to handle and grasp item with one hand. There are times when an awkward position needs to be maintained in order to complete certain types of welds on larger items. This inside shop environment works at a very quick pace and the welder needs to have the physical strength and stamina to keep up with this the speed of the rest of the welding team and the automated machinery. The welder needs to be able to sustain the weight of the required PPE during the entire shift as well as endure the excessive heat from the warm summer months and the high temperature given off from the burning equipment used.
Working Conditions
This job is performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range inside this area is from 60 degrees in the winter to over 100 degrees in the summer. There is also excess heat exposure simply due to the content of the job. There is direct exposure to metal fumes, smoke and dust while operating equipment. Some outside work may be required during the various seasons. This is a noisy environment due to the grinding and drilling with sound levels above 85 decibels. Protective welding gear and metatarsal safety boots are required at all times in the work area. Fatigue may be due to heat, the weight of the protective gear and the fast pace in which the work needs to be completed. Employee may be exposed to certain chemical vapors when the metals become heated. The employee must be able to spend the entire shift in the shop environment.
