The associate will collect, compile, and analyze macroeconomic statistics and integrated economic accounts to support policy decision-making. They are also responsible for validating source data, conducting methodological research, and preparing comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Candidates must hold an Honours degree in economics, statistics, or a related field with an accounting background. Applicants are required to have two to five years of experience in economic analysis or research and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
Collect, compile and analyse IEA statistics and associated macroeconomic indicators and share findings with senior management.
Contribute to the integration and reconciliation of data across institutional sectors, economic accounts and statistical domains to ensure consistency and coherence within the national accounts framework.
Populate, process and manage data across all relevant economic indicators and disciplines within the IEA domain, maintaining a comprehensive and accurate database.
Validate source data and check the accuracy of received and processed data, while liaising regularly with data providers.
Assist in special projects run by the department.
Conduct methodological research to improve the maturity and quality of relevant economic indicators.
Reconcile input data and economic findings with other macroeconomic statistics, using advanced business intelligence tools and applications.
Monitor and analyse conditions affecting the economy by staying abreast of developments in the assigned domain.
Apply appropriate methodological standards, guidelines and principles in line with international best practice.
Stay informed of new research and statistical methodologies, considering their implications for the work area.
Compile thorough, comprehensive and descriptive reports.
Collaborate with external stakeholders and represent the SARB in professional settings.
Prepare and deliver impactful briefings and presentations on research findings and economic analysis to internal and external stakeholders.

Section 224 of the Constitution of South Africa states the mandate of the SARB as follows:
The primary object of the South African Reserve Bank is to protect the value of the currency in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth in the Republic.
The South African Reserve Bank, in support of its primary objective, must perform its functions independently and without fear, favour or prejudice.

Open market operations are the main tool we use to implement monetary policy. We manage South Africa’s gold and foreign exchange reserves.
Financial Surveillance
The SARB is responsible for regulating cross-border transactions, preventing the abuse of the financial system and supporting the regulation of financial institutions.
Payments and Settlements
The SARB is responsible for ensuring the safety and soundness of the national payment system, which is the backbone of South Africa’s modern financial system.

The key function of the ESD is the compiling of economic statistics and conducting analysis and research, through:
