So, join us as a Head of Asset Investment Management and find your superpower.

National Grid is hiring a Head of Asset Investment Management   - This role is based from our Warwick office - Hybrid working.

(No Sponsorship is available for this role)

Job Purpose

We are looking for a strategic and influential Head of Asset Investment Management to lead the development of NGET's asset investment strategy and translate it into clear, prioritised and evidence-based investment decisions across our transmission asset portfolio.

This is a high-impact leadership role at the heart of Asset Management, responsible for shaping Asset Group, Site and Circuit Strategies and developing the 0–10-year asset health intervention pipeline. You will ensure investment decisions are aligned to business strategy, asset risk appetite, regulatory commitments and whole-life value principles.

Leading a team of asset management specialists, you will drive the transformation and systemisation of asset health management, embedding robust governance, data-led decision-making and continuous improvement across the organisation. You will also play a critical role in building regulatory confidence, supporting future price control submissions and ensuring a clear line of sight from strategy through to intervention and delivery.

What you'll do

  • Lead the development and ownership of Asset Group Strategies across NGET's transmission asset portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, regulatory requirements and asset risk appetite.
  • Shape Site and Circuit Strategies that optimise investment decisions through a system-level view of network performance, resilience and future requirements.
  • Define asset performance, risk, condition and whole-life cost objectives to support consistent and evidence-based investment decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain a prioritised 0–10-year asset health intervention pipeline, translating strategic objectives into actionable investment plans.
  • Lead the assessment and prioritisation of asset interventions using NGET's Asset Management Value Framework.
  • Oversee the Asset Health process, ensuring robust methodologies, data quality and consistent approaches are applied across the asset base.
  • Drive the continuous improvement and systemisation of asset health management, transforming the way asset health decisions are made and evidenced.
  • Sponsor and lead key Asset Health Transformation programmes, including improvements in condition monitoring, analytics, data management and governance.
  • Develop robust engineering justifications, investment cases and options assessments to support investment decisions and future regulatory submissions.
  • Support the development of future non-load investment cases through clear technical evidence, risk analysis and cost-benefit assessments.
  • Act as a senior technical leader in regulatory engagement, providing expertise and evidence to support assurance activities and stakeholder confidence.
  • Build strong relationships across Asset Management, Engineering, Operations, Network Planning, Finance, Regulation, Asset Information and Digital teams to drive aligned decision-making.
  • Lead, coach and develop a high-performing team while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability and continuous improvement.

About you

You are an experienced asset management leader with a proven track record of developing asset strategies, shaping investment decisions and delivering value across complex infrastructure portfolios.

You thrive in environments where strategic thinking, technical expertise and stakeholder influence are equally important. You have the credibility to engage senior leaders, challenge established approaches and drive transformational change while maintaining focus on business outcomes, regulatory obligations and asset performance.

You'll bring:

  • Significant senior-level experience in Asset Management, Asset Investment Planning or Engineering Leadership within electricity transmission, utilities or major infrastructure sectors.
  • Proven experience developing Asset Group Strategies and translating them into investment plans, intervention programmes and business cases.
  • Strong understanding of asset health, condition monitoring, asset degradation, reliability, risk-based prioritisation and whole-life asset management principles.
  • Experience making complex investment decisions within a regulated environment, balancing risk, cost, deliverability and long-term value.
  • A strong track record of preparing engineering justification papers, business cases and regulatory evidence to support major investment decisions.
  • A good understanding of price control frameworks and regulatory environments, with the ability to demonstrate clear traceability from strategy through to delivery.
  • Experience driving process improvement, governance and standardisation across cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data, insight and evidence to influence decisions.
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience leading teams and driving performance in a complex stakeholder environment.
  • Energy, passion and a drive to challenge traditional approaches, helping to transform asset health management and shape the future of the network.

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or a related technical discipline. Qualifications in Economics, Finance or related professional disciplines will also be considered.
  • Professional certification or diploma from the Institute of Asset Management (IAM).
  • Proven track record in Asset Management, Asset Investment Management or Engineering Decision-Making within a complex regulated environment.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Significant experience in asset management, asset investment planning or engineering leadership within utilities, electricity transmission or other major infrastructure sectors.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer, Chartered Manager or equivalent professional status.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as IAM, IET or ILM.
  • Experience within electricity transmission or closely related regulated utility networks.
  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions and investment justification within a price control environment.
