Founding Engineer, Forward Deployed

San Francisco · On-site$140k – $175k + EquityNo Visa Sponsorship

About this role

We are looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer with 1-4 years of experience to join Backbone as a founding team member and close the engineering-product-design loop directly with customers. You'll sit with providers and payers, understand their workflows in real-time, and ship full-stack features end-to-end at high velocity. This is a heavily engineering-focused role (~60-70% building, ~30-40% customer-facing) where you'll identify what's broken, implement the fix, and deploy it — often same-day. You'll work directly with the CEO and founding engineer to turn messy healthcare workflows into elegant product solutions that power instant payments between payers and providers.

What will you be doing?

Sitting with providers and payers to observe their authorization, claims, denial, and payment workflows, then shipping features end-to-end to solve their pain points

Closing the EPD (engineering-product-design) loop independently — from identifying a customer problem to implementing and deploying the solution at high velocity

Debugging live customer issues across charts, claims, payer portals, and operational queues, often shipping fixes same-day

Traveling to customer sites when needed to deepen product understanding and accelerate deployment quality

Working across the full stack with a backend orientation to build and iterate on product features from pilot through post-close expansion

Company at a glance

Backbone builds clinical AI software that streamlines healthcare payments between payers and providers, automating claims processing, authorizations, and denials to reduce the $350 billion in annual U.S. healthcare administrative costs.
