Summary

The YWCA of Asheville is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The Finance Manager plays a vital role in maintaining the organization's financial integrity through accurate accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, this position supports strategic decision-making by providing timely financial information, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring responsible stewardship of the organization's financial resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Operations

  • Maintain and oversee the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.

  • Prepare monthly journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and allocations. 

  • Reconcile all bank, credit card and investment accounts

  • Oversee the accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Monitor cash flow and prepare cash flow projections. 

  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure proper coding of revenues and expenses. 

  • Ensure compliance with established accounting policies and internal controls. 

Financial Reporting and Budgeting

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including: Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Budget-To-Actual reports and cash flow statements.

  • Assist CFO in developing the annual operating and capital budgets

  • Prepare financial reports for leadership, Board committees and department directors

  • Support strategic financial planning through financial analysis and forecasting

Grant and Fund accounting

  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds in accordance with donor intent.

  • Monitor grant budgets and expenditures.

  • Prepare financial reports for grant funders.

  • Assist Development staff with grant budgets and financial information 

Audit and Compliance

  • Prepare end-of-year audit schedules and coordinate with external auditors.

  • Assist with the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required filings

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Maintain accurate and organized financial documentation for audits and regulatory purposes.

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Serve as the administrator for QuickBooks and other accounting software and websites

  • Oversee the management and maintenance of the organization's financial software.

  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure alignment with reporting and operational needs.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the CFO and the Director of People and Culture to ensure accurate payroll and benefits expense entries.

  • Work collaboratively with department leaders to support budgeting, financial planning, and program sustainability. 

  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness. 

  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the highest ethical standards. 

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting.

  • Experience with fund accounting and donor-restricted funds.

  • Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online or comparable accounting software.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.

  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the mission of the YWCA.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience in nonprofit accounting.

  • Experience in financial accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis.

  • Experience with nonprofit grant accounting preferred. 

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, 32-hour work week, Monday–Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work for events or program needs.

  • Regular use of office equipment, including computers and financial software.

  • Sedentary work requiring prolonged periods of sitting and data entry.

  • Occasional repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and via written reports.

  • Close visual acuity required for data analysis and financial reporting.

Travel Required:
Minimal travel may be required for meetings, training, or external audits.
