Overview
The Lead Clinical Laboratory Technician/Technologist performs moderate and high complexity testing and result analysis for clinical laboratory departments including chemistry, immunoassay, infectious disease, hematology, urinalysis, and blood bank subdisciplines. Participates in documenting and implementing Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC)/Quality Inventory (QI) procedures. Assists in troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment and serves as a technical and operational resource to laboratory staff.
In addition to bench responsibilities, the Lead Clinical Laboratory Technician/Technologist supports day-to-day workflow coordination, training of staff, troubleshooting, quality initiatives, turnaround time (TAT) monitoring, and reinforcement of laboratory procedures and expectations. Assists the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in maintaining an efficient, compliant, and inspection-ready laboratory environment while performing laboratory tasks independently.
Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday; 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Responsibilities
Accurately performs, evaluates, interprets, and reports results for clinical laboratory testing disciplines including chemistry, immunoassay, infectious diseases, hematology, urinalysis, and blood bank.
Follows all laboratory procedures to maintain safety, quality, and compliance.
Participates in ongoing hazardous chemical waste training and complies with all laboratory safety procedures when handling and disposing of hazardous chemical waste
Correctly identifies and labels patient specimens.
Correlates and interprets laboratory data based on clinical knowledge.
Executes required maintenance on all laboratory instrumentation.
Performs simple to complex testing utilizing established departmental protocols.
Reads, understands, and adheres to all the SOPs, policies, and protocols.
Reports results via the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Prepares clinical specimens for testing and identifies specimen related problems.
Establishes and performs proper quality control measures (i.e. temperature monitoring, instrument maintenance, reagent/specimen preparation, etc.) in accordance with laboratory operating standards.
Documents daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly quality activities (e.g. equipment/instrument maintenance, calibrations, certifications, corrective actions) to support quality assurance initiatives.
Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance, reporting of test results, workflow efficiency, or instrument function and troubleshoots and/or escalates concerns appropriately.
Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Assists the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in coordinating efficient day-to-day workflow operations, monitoring operational concerns, and addressing delays or barriers impacting testing, turnaround time, or patient care.
Assists in monitoring pending logs, TIQs, aging specimens, and workflow barriers to support turnaround time goals and timely patient result reporting.
Serves as a technical resource for laboratory personnel regarding testing, troubleshooting, QC, reflex testing, send-outs, critical value reporting, and workflow questions.
Assists in training, onboarding, mentoring, and supporting laboratory personnel while reinforcing SOP adherence and established workflow processes.
Assists in ensuring quality control, calibrations, maintenance, and associated documentation are completed in accordance with laboratory standards and escalates unresolved concerns appropriately.
Provides technical support and troubleshooting guidance for analyzer, workflow, and testing issues; escalate unresolved concerns to laboratory leadership and/or vendors as appropriate.
Reinforces laboratory quality, compliance, safety, communication standards, and inspection readiness expectations while promoting an inspection-ready environment.
Assists in maintaining inventory levels and proactively communicates supply concerns to laboratory leadership.
Maintains records demonstrating proficiency testing (PT) samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and workspace.
Serves as an operational point of contact in the absence of the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor for routine workflow and technical concerns.
Assists in preparation of validation documentation of new tests and procedures as assigned.
Qualifications
Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in Clinical Laboratory Sciences/Medical Technology or related, required.
Bachelor's degree (B. S.) or equivalent from four-year college or technical school in Clinical Laboratory Sciences/Medical Technology or related, preferred.
Minimum 3 years of clinical laboratory testing experience in chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, urinalysis, and blood bank,
Certification as a Medical Technician, Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) from a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT), preferred.
Florida State Licensure is not required
Experience with Beckman-Coulter Instrumentation, preferred.
Thorough knowledge of laboratory testing methodologies, instrumentation, and quality control procedures.
