Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for providing building support services that ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for all occupants. This position involves performing a wide range of cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance tasks to support the daily operations of the facility. Custodians are expected to work professionally, follow policies and procedures, adapt to flexible schedules, and contribute effectively as part of a team.
The Custodian reports directly to the Manager of Custodial Services and may also receive assignments from the Director/Assistant Director of Facilities Management or other designated staff. In carrying out duties, this role requires interaction with faculty, staff, and members of the public.
Responsibilities
Perform general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to maintain a safe, sanitary, and pleasant physical environment.
Carry out cleaning duties including, but not limited to, furniture moving, office cleaning, room cleaning, restroom cleaning, and exterior entrance cleaning.
Provide emergency support as needed, including assistance during staffing shortages, snow removal, and other urgent situations.
Safely operate custodial tools, equipment, and supplies as part of daily tasks.
Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with staff, faculty, and the public.
Comply with institutional policies, safety regulations, and best practices for custodial services.
Demonstrate flexibility with work assignments and scheduling, including participation in reviews that may affect work mode or role expectations.
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
Qualifications
Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, scrubbing, and other custodial labor requiring endurance.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and operate custodial equipment.
Ability to sit, walk, and stand for extended periods while performing custodial tasks.
Observes and complies with all applicable state, federal, and local safety rules and regulations.
Ability to drive university or company vehicles, when assigned.
Strong customer service orientation and a positive, professional attitude.
Must be available and willing to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts as required.
