Full job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Participate in structured training focused on safety, railcar repair standards, operational processes, leadership fundamentals, and applicable company policies. 
  • Develop working knowledge of railcar inspection, maintenance, and repair activities, including applicable AAR, FRA, and company standards. 
  • Support daily shop operations, including workflow coordination, production tracking, quality expectations, and communication of operational priorities. 
  • Promote and reinforce safe work practices while supporting compliance with safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and company expectations. 
  • Learn and apply basic supervisory practices, including coaching, communication, performance follow-up, employee engagement, and conflict resolution. 
  • Assist with monitoring labor, materials, staffing coverage, and operating resources to support efficient and effective repair operations. 
  • Develop the ability to supervise represented employees in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements and company policies. 

 

Training and Development 

  • Complete a structured ramp-up period with defined learning objectives and increasing operational responsibility. 
  • Participate in formal training covering safety, railcar repair standards, regulatory requirements, operational processes, and leadership expectations. 
  • Receive mentorship and coaching from experienced supervisors, managers, and operations leaders. 
  • Gain exposure to core areas of FMO repair operations through field-based learning and practical assignments. 
  • Receive ongoing feedback and development planning throughout the training period. 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, operations management, engineering, industrial technology, supply chain, transportation, logistics, or a related field preferred. 
  • Early career experience through internships, co-ops, campus leadership, military experience, operations exposure, or related hands-on work experience preferred. 
  • Demonstrated interest in developing into a frontline supervisory role within railcar repair, transportation, manufacturing, maintenance, or industrial operations. 
  • Strong commitment to safety, learning, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. 
  • Effective communication, problem-solving, organization, and leadership potential. 

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements 

This role combines office and outdoor rail yard work. You’ll be active throughout the day—walking the site, engaging with employees, and supporting operations. Occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs), use of tools, and standard vision and communication abilities are required.

Work schedules may vary depending on operational demands. Candidates must be comfortable working evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
