A Brief Overview
The Learning Experience Technologist III serves as an experienced hybrid designgineer who
leads the creation, implementation, testing, and adaptation of innovative educational
technologies at Stanford Medicine. This role combines user experience research, learning
design, and full-stack development to design, build, and refine educational technologies that
demonstrate what is possible in the evolution of learning. Working within the team alongside
faculty, physicians, and members of the medical education community, this position drives
prototyping and development efforts, applying emerging technologies including AI, immersive
learning environments, and adaptive learning systems to complex medical education
challenges.
This role is ideal for individuals with deep experience in both design and development who
operate independently, provide technical and design leadership, and model hybrid practice for
the broader team.

What you will do

• Design and develop experimental prototypes that demonstrate future possibilities in educational technology, particularly in medical and health sciences education, in collaboration with faculty, learners, and Educational Technology team members.
• Lead rapid prototyping initiatives to test emerging technologies (AI, AR/VR, adaptive learning) in educational contexts, working both independently and in close partnership with internal and cross-team collaborators.
• Create proof-of-concept applications that push boundaries of traditional learning experiences and pitch them to Educational Technology leadership and subgroups (Learning Design and Evaluation, Production, Academic Support), incorporating stakeholder feedback into subsequent iterations.
• Research, evaluate, and communicate about new technologies for potential adoption in medical education environments, translating technical possibilities into clear recommendations for faculty and institutional partners.
• Contribute to institutional digital transformation initiatives through innovative technology solutions, modeling collaborative practices that enable other teams and departments to adopt and scale successful approaches.
• Execute full-cycle development from user research and ideation through implementation and deployment in collaboration with the Learning Innovation Futurist Team
• Build custom learning components, interactive modules, and educational applications using modern web technologies in collaboration with the Educational Technology team
• Use APIs and integrations to connect new applications to learning platforms as needed (Canvas, Coursera, LearnDash, Articulate Storyline) in alignment with needs from the Learning Design and Evaluation team
• Implement AI-powered features including chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems, and personalized learning pathways in collaboration with the Educational Technology team
• Create responsive, accessible educational interfaces following universal design principles
• Maintain and evolve codebases for educational applications and learning tools
• Collaborate with our evaluation team to support analytics needs related to learning outcomes, course performance, and user activity.
• Conduct user research with medical students, faculty, and healthcare professionals to identify learning needs as needed, both independently and in collaboration with the Learning Design and Evaluation group
• Facilitate design thinking sessions with stakeholders and team members in workshops and collaborative ideation sessions
• Synthesize research findings into actionable design requirements and technical specifications
• Test and iterate solutions based on user feedback and learning analytics data both independently and collaboratively
• Document and communicate research insights to inform team strategy and development priorities
• Partner with learning designers to translate pedagogical goals into technical solutions
• Collaborate with the Production team to ensure seamless integration of technology components
• Mentor student workers and coordinate with freelance developers on project deliverables
• Pitch innovative solutions and emerging technology insights to faculty, leadership, the Learning Design and Evaluation team, and the Production team
• Contribute to publications, conference presentations, and grant proposals
• Facilitate and enable the Educational Technology team to adopt or recommend new technologies through documentation, training, demonstration, and consensus building

Education Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Educational
  Technology, Cognitive Science, Design, or related field
• OR equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience in technology

Experience Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of experience in user experience design, software development, or educational technology
• Portfolio showcasing innovative digital learning experiences and technical implementations
• Experience with simulation, immersive learning technologies, or interactive educational content required
• Evidence of continuous learning and adaptation to emerging technologies

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and modern web frameworks (React, Vue, or Angular)
• Experience with API development
• Ability to responsibly use AI-assisted development tools
• Version control systems and collaborative development workflows
• Responsive design and mobile development approaches ○ Familiarity with learning design analytics
• User-centered design methodologies and design thinking facilitation
• Rapid prototyping and iterative design processes
• User research methods including interviews, usability testing, and journey mapping
• Wireframing and prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD)
• Experience implementing AI in educational applications
• Understanding of learning management system architectures and integration patterns
• Accessibility standards and universal design for learning principles
• Learning analytics and data-driven design decisions
• Exceptional communication skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences
• Growth mindset with demonstrated ability to quickly learn new programming languages and platforms
• Self-directed learner with curiosity about emerging technologies and their educational applications
• Strong presentation skills for showcasing work to stakeholders and executive leadership ● Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Experience with machine learning frameworks or AI model training
• Knowledge of learning analytics platforms and educational data mining
• Familiarity with WebGL, Three.js, or other 3D web technologies
• Experience with AR/VR development (Unity, A-Frame, WebXR, 8th Wall)
• Cloud platform experience (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
• Background in medical or health sciences education technology
• Understanding of continuing medical education (CME) requirements and platforms
• Experience with clinical simulation or medical training technologies
• Familiarity with SCORM, xAPI, or other e-learning standards
• Preferred graduate degree in Educational Technology, Learning Sciences, or related field
• Preferred professional certifications in UX design, cloud platforms, or educational technology
• Published research or conference presentations in educational technology
• Grant writing experience or participation in funded research projects
• Community involvement in EdTech initiatives

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $59.21 - $78.43 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
