Job Description:

Who We Are

Seattle Pacific University is a Christian university fully committed to engaging the culture and changing the world by graduating people of competence and character, becoming people of wisdom, and modeling grace-filled community.

Seattle Pacific Athletics is committed to developing champions in competition, in the classroom, and in life. As a member of NCAA Division II and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), SPU Athletics emphasizes excellence, integrity, service, and Christian character. The Women's Rowing program provides student-athletes with a highly competitive and supportive environment where they can grow as athletes, students, leaders, and followers of Christ.

What We Need:

Seattle Pacific University is seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual to join our Women’s Rowing team as a part-time Assistant Coach. This role is ideal for someone eager to grow within NCAA rowing while playing a pivotal role in recruiting, mentoring, and leading student-athletes toward competitive success. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, team player, and positive role model who thrives in a faith-centered educational environment.

The Assistant Rowing Coach position supports Seattle Pacific University’s mission by contributing to a Christ‑centered learning and working community committed to academic excellence, service, and engagement with the world. In this role, the employee brings their skills, gifts, and professional expertise to work that matters—serving students, colleagues, and the broader University community in ways that reflect SPU’s values and purpose. To that end, all University employees are required to be aligned with and supportive of SPU's Statement of Faith and its derivative policies and lifestyle expectations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead, mentor, and support student-athletes with integrity and enthusiasm
  • Recruit prospective student-athletes both from high schools and from the on-campus community
  • Instruct rowing fundamentals and foster development of novice rowers into varsity contributors
  • Collaborate with the Head Coach and other staff to deliver safe, successful team experiences
  • Assist with administrative tasks and logistical operations
  • Participate in spring travel and weekend events as required
  • Help with rowing equipment maintenance and boathouse upkeep
  • Represent SPU Athletics with professionalism and positivity

What You Bring:

Education: Bachelor’s degree required

Experience: Experience with a competitive collegiate rowing program (as athlete or coach)

Skills & Characteristics:

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities
  • Initiative and commitment to athlete development and recruitment
  • Enthusiasm for collaborative team culture and student mentorship
  • Interest in learning and growing as a collegiate coach

Certifications (or willingness to obtain post-hire with SPU support):

  • CPR Certification
  • Washington State Boater’s License
  • Washington State Driver’s License
  • USRowing Level 2 Certification

Mission Alignment: You have a personal commitment to Christian faith, enthusiasm about supporting SPU's mission, alignment with the University's Statement of Faith, and willingness to accept the lifestyle standards of the Christian community.

  • Salary Range: $8,000 - $12,000 annually, DOE, 10 month appt
    Position Type: Part-Time, Exempt
Hours: Approx. 10-12 hours per week; mornings preferred
    Start Date: Mid September
    End Date: Mid June

Why SPU?

Seattle Pacific University’s beautiful campus is nestled in North Queen Anne, just minutes from downtown Seattle. The Women’s Rowing program enjoys direct access to our on-campus boathouse and daily practices on the protected waters of the Seattle Ship Canal and Lake Union. SPU’s rowing team has experienced significant growth and success and is poised for continued excellence with institutional support and a strong vision for the future.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, SPS prepares students for faithful service to Jesus Christ through transformational ministry in the church and world. In the School of Theology, we embrace a threefold model of theological education that we call “Academy, Abbey, Apostolate.” The interplay of scholarship, spiritual edification, and service — all informed by our Wesleyan heritage that joins "knowledge and vital piety" as a means of changing the world — defines a vision that distinguishes SPU among theology schools and seminaries.
