Summary:
This role is critical to ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of refrigeration and ventilation systems across all vessel compartments. The Refrigeration & HVAC Technician supports the maintenance and repair of critical provision cooling, catering, and environmental control systems onboard passenger ships or ferries. With a focus on preventive maintenance, system monitoring, and compliance with international standards such as GLOBAL-HESS, PMS, USPH, and HESS-MS, the technician plays a key part in safeguarding food safety, passenger comfort, and operational integrity. The position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of refrigeration systems, including provisions refrigerating plants, chilled and freezer rooms, refrigerated catering equipment, and ice machines.
- Monitor and control storage temperatures in provision rooms and refrigerated areas; conduct regular alarm tests and thermometer calibrations.
- Manage refrigerant handling procedures, including leak detection, reporting, and mitigation measures to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Maintain and service refrigerated beverage dispensing systems and associated refrigeration components.
- Conduct inventory checks for spare parts and consumables; ensure accurate data entry and timely procurement support.
- Perform planned maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems, including air conditioning units, ductwork, fans, and fire dampers.
- Carry out daily inspections of engine room ventilation systems in accordance with TEC 1102 (Machinery space round).
- Monitor and regulate fan outlets and cabin ventilation systems to maintain optimal indoor air quality.
- Maintain accurate logbooks and department records, ensuring data integrity and compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
- Support safety initiatives by adhering to HESS regulations, reporting violations, and assisting in safety duties as directed by the HVAC Engineer or senior management.
- Participate in system tests and inspections required by GLOBAL-HESS, PMS, USPH, HESS-MS, and other regulatory bodies.
- Promote a strong health and safety culture by following all health protocols to prevent disease spread onboard.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Refrigeration Technician or HVAC Technician in marine environments, facility management, or similar industries.
- Demonstrated expertise in fault finding, system diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance of refrigeration and HVAC systems.
- Hands-on experience with refrigerant handling, leak detection, and compliance with environmental regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, piping diagrams, and system specifications.
- Proficient in maintaining and servicing ice machines, refrigerated catering equipment, and beverage dispensing systems.
- Strong understanding of safety procedures, HESS standards, and health protocols onboard vessels.
- Proven ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Familiarity with planned maintenance systems (PMS) and procurement processes for spare parts.
