Full job description
SailGP Technologies is the high performance design, engineering and manufacturing arm of SailGP, the global purpose-led sail grand prix championship.
The Rolex SailGP Championship is the most exciting racing on water, where anything can happen in short, adrenaline-fueled battles between national teams at iconic stadium destinations worldwide. Top athletes fly in identical high-tech F50 catamarans faster than the wind, at speeds in excess of 100km/h (60mph). Founded in 2018, SailGP is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports and entertainment properties, now in its sixth season.
SailGP’s constantly evolving design, composites engineering, software and data expertise is rooted in decades of experience at the forefront of cutting-edge sail racing. Previously established and located in New Zealand since 2001, SailGP Technologies has relocated to Southampton, UK, with the new state of the art facility which opened in Spring 2024.
Job Summary:
The Chase Boat Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, servicing, repair and operational readiness of the SailGP chase boat fleet. Working within the On Water Operations (OWO) team, this role ensures all chase boats remain safe, reliable and event-ready throughout the race season. The position requires an experienced marine mechanic who is comfortable working in fast-paced, mixed environments including workshops, marinas, shipyards and international event venues.
We’re looking for technically skilled, hands-on individuals to join the team in a unique dual role: working both onsite at our SailGP Technologies facility in Southampton and travelling worldwide as part of the SailGP Tour.
Responsibilities:
Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance across the chase boat fleet.
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults on a variety of vessels.
Service, maintain and repair high-performance outboard engines, including Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki.
Perform routine servicing, fault diagnosis and major repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
Maintain and repair hydraulic steering systems, including helms, pumps, rams and associated components.
Install, maintain and troubleshoot engine-related 12V and 24V electrical systems, including starting circuits, charging systems, engine wiring harnesses, battery management systems, engine control systems, ignition systems and associated electronic components.
Conduct pre-event, daily and post-event inspections to ensure all vessels are safe and operational.
Respond rapidly to mechanical failures during events, both dockside and on the water, completing repairs within demanding operational timeframes.
Operate manufacturer diagnostic software and tools to identify faults, update engine systems and verify repairs.
Prepare vessels for international freight, including de-rigging, preservation, loading, unloading and recommissioning.
Assist with the launching, recovery and preparation of chase boats using trailers, slipways, cranes, travel lifts and marina facilities. Support vessel loading, unloading and transportation during international events while ensuring all equipment is handled safely and efficiently.
Manage spare parts inventory and ensure critical components are available for international events.
Maintain accurate maintenance records using the fleet maintenance management system and complete service documentation.
Liaise with manufacturers, suppliers and specialist contractors regarding technical support, warranty claims and repair solutions.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase fleet reliability, improve maintenance practices and minimise operational downtime.
Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.
Ensure all work is completed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, company procedures and health and safety standards.
Work closely with Fleet Operations, Chase Team Leads and external service providers to maximise fleet reliability and support race operations.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Proven experience as a marine mechanic.
Extensive knowledge of modern marine outboard engines, with experience servicing Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki engines.
Experience maintaining 150–450 HP four-stroke outboard engines.
Strong understanding of engine-related 12V electrical systems and fault finding.
