Reading Assist is a regional nonprofit dedicated to helping children with the most significant reading challenges reach proficiency. Through high-impact tutoring, educator training, and community partnerships grounded in the science of reading, Reading Assist provides intensive literacy support across Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC.
Reading Assist is launching a Pre-K Literacy Pilot to deliver small group and classroom-based literacy support in early childhood centers across Wilmington. Through this pilot, trained Early Literacy Guides will work in Pre-K classrooms to deliver evidence-based instruction grounded in the science of reading and aligned to developmentally appropriate, play-based practices.
The Special Project Coordinator will lead all aspects of this pilot, from curriculum selection and program design to staff management and outcome reporting. This role serves as the operational and programmatic lead for the initiative, ensuring the pilot is implemented with fidelity, Early Literacy Guides are well-supported, and participating centers experience the program as a high-quality, low-burden partnership.
Research, evaluate, and select a developmentally appropriate Pre-K literacy curriculum aligned to the science of reading for children ages 4–5
Design and oversee the overall pilot program, including implementation timelines, instructional models, and site protocols
Hire, train, and directly manage four Early Literacy Guides who deliver classroom-based literacy support across participating centers
Build and maintain strong relationships with Pre-K center directors and classroom teachers to support effective, flexible implementation
Develop and maintain scheduling across up to 15 Pre-K classrooms at multiple sites, coordinating Early Literacy Guide assignments
Oversee administration of pre- and post-program assessments using the Preschool Early Literacy Indicators (PELI) tool
Monitor student outcome data, identify children needing additional support, and use data to continuously improve program delivery
Facilitate regular team meetings with Early Literacy Guides to ensure instructional quality, shared learning, and staff satisfaction
Serve as the primary liaison between Reading Assist and participating early childhood centers throughout the pilot period
Manage the pilot budget, track expenditures, and maintain accurate records across all program cost categories
Produce a final pilot report including student outcome data, participant feedback, and recommendations for future programming
Regular travel is required to early childhood centers across Wilmington and surrounding areas. Some evening hours may be required. This position is based in Wilmington, DE, and candidates are expected to work in the Wilmington office on a hybrid schedule.QualificationsExperience, Skills, and Competencies
Experience in early childhood education, Pre-K instruction, or literacy program development required
3+ years of experience managing staff or direct reports strongly preferred
Knowledge of the science of reading and developmentally appropriate literacy practices for ages 3–5
Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple sites and schedules simultaneously
Excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse community-based partners
Experience with student assessment tools and data-driven program improvement
Ability to train, coach, and develop paraprofessional or tutoring staff
A strong outcome orientation with the ability to track progress toward measurable program goals
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in education, early childhood, or a related field preferred
Salary: $70,000, commensurate with experience

An AmeriCorps program providing year-round literacy tutoring to children in K-3 with significant reading challenges
Reading Assist provides year-round high-impact literacy tutoring services to at-risk children in kindergarten through third grade with significant reading challenges. We partner with schools across Delaware, in Chester, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., offering our core school-year program as well as after-school and summer tutoring. Our mission is to provide intensive services for young, at-risk children with the most significant reading challenges to help them achieve progress and proficiency. For Reading Assist’s core school-year program, we recruit, train, and deploy AmeriCorps members, known as Reading Assist Fellows, who deliver daily reading instruction in one-on-one or small group settings. We focus on schools serving high proportions of students of color, those with disabilities, and multilingual learners. Our approach targets students in the lowest 25% of their peers in reading proficiency. Students served by Reading Assist Fellows receive 30-40 minutes of instruction three to five days a week throughout the school year. High-impact tutoring is one of the most effective methods to foster reading growth, especially among low-income students and students of color. Fellows help students progress from minimal proficiency to mastery of key reading benchmarks within one academic year. Additionally, Reading Assist offers two programs to support students beyond the school day: an after-school tutoring program, launched in the 2022-2023 school year, and a summer tutoring program, now in its fourth year. These programs extend the support for our students throughout the year. Each year, at least 85% of our students reach grade-level benchmarks. We are thrilled that data from the 2023-24 school year shows 90% of students reached benchmark levels in at least one foundational reading skill, with 75% of kindergarteners meeting grade-level benchmarks.
