Job Summary

This position is designed to ensure cross-functional knowledge, operational continuity, and strong collaboration across the accounting and finance functions of the organization. Reporting directly to the VP of Finance and Accounting, this position plays a critical part in aligning financial operations with organizational strategy and executive priorities. This position supports both the accounting and finance functions and works closely with the Director of Grants, Controller, and Manager of Finance and Accounting to promote coordination and efficiency. The position will provide oversight to the Manager, Maritime Accounts & Tariff, who is responsible for Billing and Revenue Reporting. This role supports the Controller in preparing schedules, reconciliations, and other month-end and year-end financial reporting, including the annual budget. This position also will provide support to the Chief Financial Officer as needed. The position also partners with external auditors by preparing audit schedules and assisting with the coordination and execution of the annual audit process.

The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to drive cross-functional alignment and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions 

General Finance and Accounting

  • Oversee the Manager, Maritime Accounts & Tariff to ensure accurate reporting and invoicing
  • Collaborate with the VP of Finance and Accounting and Controller to develop a comprehensive understanding of all finance and accounting processes.
  • Lead and/or support the preparation and review of budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models.
  • Acts as a liaison between the finance and accounting teams to ensure alignment and effective collaboration.
  • Prepare and/or review journal entries in the financial system as appropriate.
  • Monitor and evaluate financial performance and trends to provide actionable insights to senior management to support informed decision making.
  • Ensure compliance with GASB and GAAP standards.
  • Ensure compliance with grant regulations established by governing agencies.

Other Finance Department Duties:

  • Assist with the reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
  • Assist in review and reconciliation of fixed assets.
  • Support the preparation of audit schedules and other information for annual audits.
  • Serve as a backup for key functions within the accounting and finance functions to ensure continuity of operations during staff absences.
  • Collaborate with management to set financial goals and budgets aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness across finance and accounting functions.
  • Evaluate existing processes withing Finance and accounting and implement automation, digitalization and data-driven methods to include emerging technologies.
  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned by the CFO and VP of Finance and Accounting.
  • During emergency conditions, all CPA employees are considered essential personnel and may be subject to recall. These events may include, but are not limited to, natural, man-made, or public health emergencies. Employees may be expected to perform emergency and/or recovery operations outside of their normal assigned responsibilities and routine working hours.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Graduate of a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • CPA or MBA preferred
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, including leadership experience.
  • Accounting professional with 8+ years of experience spanning public accounting and private industry, specializing in financial reporting, audit, and process improvement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting (GASB, GAAP, audits, grant compliance, accruals, internal controls) and finance (budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis)
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Experience working with Net Suite or similar cloud-based ERP system
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across all levels of the organization.

Licenses / Certification Required:

  • Florida Driver’s License 

Physical Requirement

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in a sedentary to light work.
  • May involve some lifting, carrying pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 lbs.)

Environmental Requirements

  • Work is performed in usual office conditions.
